JOHN V. RICE, JR, OF (ll-TESTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
ECCENTRIC VALVE-G EAR.
S?ECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,081, dated March 5, 1889.
Application filed October 4, 1888.
To aZZ 1072/0772, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN V. RICE J12, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chester, in the county of Delaware and State of ljennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improven'ients in Eccentric Valve Gears; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of. the drawings isareprescntation of this invention and is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is partly a front view and partly a crosssection. Figs. 3 and l are details. Fig. 5 is a modification.
The invention relates to improvements in single eccentric valve-gear for steam-engines; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
The invention is intended more particularly for use in connection with engines having three cylinders. It is evident, however, that the device is adapted for use in connection with any engine, and the object is to provide a valve of simple construction that is easily repaired should it become broken.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the steam-chanibers, and B the exhaust-chamber.
C- is the main drivii'ig-shaft,having the crank D thereon within the chamber ll, and having hearings u o.
3 represents the valve eccentric, haviu g the integral sleeve l litting loosely on the main shaft, as shown. The outer sleeve, 1), oscillates on sleeve Rand is provided with the an nular groove (1 for engaging the collar G, which has the arms (2 extending outwardly through bearings f in the chamber-head. The outer ends of said arms e are threaded and provided with a nut to secure the transverse bar ll. thereon.
I is a hand-lever fulcrumed at one end to the outstanding arm J, and provided ata convenient point with the set-bolt g,u'hich moves in the arc slot 72 in the arm xi. The lever may thus be secured to hold the eccentric in the Serial No. 287,191. (No model.)
desired position on the main shaft, the said lever being connected to the transverse bar ll by the pivoted link 7..
The sleeve F is provided with diam etricallyopposite longitudinal slots 1, and a pin, 911, preferably threaded at its upper end, passes through a threaded opening in the sleeve 1) and through the slots 1, projecting into the recesses n on the main shaft. The recesses n on each side of the shaft cross each other centrally and obliquely to the direction of the shaft.
In operation when the lever is pulled outwardly the end of the pins on traverse the oblique recesses in the shaft, which changes the position of the eccentric.
It is obvious that screw-bolts operated by gearing, as shown in Fi 5, may be substituted for the lever and its connections with the col.- lar G \vithout materially changing my in vention.
In order to facilitate the Working of the parts, each pin m carries on its inner end the spiral form-block r, which engages the oblique slot of the shaft, and next to this block is provided the straight block .2, which engages the slot of the sleeve of the eccentric.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to semire by Letters Patent,
The eccentric valve-gear forsteam-engines, consisting of the eccentric having the sleeve fitting loosely on the main shaft and having diametrically-opposite longitudinal slots, the outer sleeve having applied thereto means for the movement of the valve, said main shaft having oblique crossi ug recesses therein, and the pins or pivots connected to the outer sleeve and passed through the slots in the inner sleeve, and having spiral form of blocks engaging with the oblique crossing slots of the main shaft, substantially as and for the purpose set forth In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
