WILLIAM W. CARTER, OF BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO B. B. LEWIS, OF SAME PLACE.

IMPROVEMENT IN CALENDAR-CLOCKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,883, dated September 15, 1863; autedated September 7, 1862.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W. CARTER, of Bristol, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Clocks; and I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the following specification and drawings; and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe its construction and mode of using, referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.

The nature of this improvement consists, first, in securing a calendar device to a dial, so that it may be readily applied to a clock already made, without a calendar-movement, by simply moving the dial thereon and substituting this improvement therefor, the object of which is to furnish to thosepersons who have good clocks, and do not wish to dispose of them, topurchasenewones,(upon the uncertainties as to quality for time-keepers,) a calendar device attached to a dial, at a small extra expense, without injury or alteration, except as above statedviz., by removing the old dial and substituting another having the attachment or calendar device thereon and, second, it consists in the mode of providing a dial with a smaller dial or dials than itself, and of cutting and securing the same therein, so that a dial already made may be provided with the month and day-of-the-month dial, and also the dayof-t-he-week dial when desirable.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows an edge sectional view of a time dialplate with a calendar -movement attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a face view with a smaller dial secured thereto, and Fig. 3 shows a section of the bead-clasp, by which the smaller dial or dials are secured into the larger dial.

For my present purpose I propose to adopt the calendar device or movement which is found described and represented in the Letters Patent granted to B. B. Lewis on the 4th day of February, 1862, No. 34,341, and therefore no special description of this movement is necessary in this specification, as it is not essential to the operation of my invention.

d is a section of a cap, which I propose to make round, disk form, so as to effectually inclose the device and protect it from injury and exclude dirt and dust therefrom.

A full and clear understanding of the beadclasp e will be better understood by referring to Fig. 3. a is the large dial, 1) is the smaller dial, and 6 shows the shape of the bead-clasp, which serves not only to clasp both of the edges of the larger and smaller dial, but also serves to ornament and enrich the face of the dial.

By the use of this improvement I am enabled in a very short space of time, and at a very low price, to transform a common hourclock into a calendarelock without the liability of in any way injuring the running gear or the elegance of its appearance.

I believe I have shown the nature, construction, and mode of applying my improvement, so as to enable a person skilled in the arts to make and use the same.

I claim- 1. Securing a calendar-movement onto a dial-plate, in combination with a time or ordinary clock movement, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.

2. The clasp e, for fastening the dial plates (1 and I) together, as set forth.
