KUNTTBD STATES PATENT OFFICE AUDIEL lV. EICHELBERGER, OF ILXOYR., PESYT\NL\.
RAILWAY CATTLE-GUARD- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,592, dated February 26, 1889. Application filed June 12, 1888. Serial No. 276,816. (No model.)
To all'w'tom, z'b may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABDLEL W. Eionnnnn- GER, of Hanover, in the County ot' York and State ot' Penneylvania, have invented eertain Improvements in RailwayY Cattle-(wards, oi' which the following is a Specification.
ln the description of the said invention which follows reterenoe is made to the ao- ,l
oompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in whieh- Figure l is a plan or iop view of a portion of a railway-track provid ed with m v i 1n proved eattle-guard, and ll an end view of Fi l. Fig. Ill ie a side View of Fig. l, looking in the direction indicated hy the arrow.
Similar lettere of referenee indicate .similar parts in all the figures.
In the said drawings, A represents the rails of the traek, and B the cross-ties.
C C are the hase-plates of the guard, secured in an)7 suitable manner to the eross-ties- These hase-plates are plaeed wherever it is desired to prevent Cattle Afrom crossing or Straying on the track, and it will be seen that they are at the laides.` a5.' well ae between the raila.
D D are nletallie toothed guard-hars, preferably of pla-te iron or Steel, pla-eed edgewise on the hase-platee and held thereon h v ineane ot hraeketa r1.
These hraekets are holted, riveted, or otherwise seeured to the Sides of the guard-hars and to thehase-plates C. Every other tooth of the guard-hars is heut to the right., and t-he intervening ones to the left. By this arrangement fewer guardbars are required to give a desired Space between them than if the teeth were in alignment with the portion of the har beneath them, and the oost of. the Strueture .is therefore materially reduced.
At the ends of the Cattle-guard the angle of the teeth is Continued down to the haseplate, so as to lift anything hanging from the train which would he likelv to beeolne entangled with the hars, and, if desired, me
tallie strips F may he used, as shown, as an additional precaution. These strips arein an angular position, and may he hacked with wood or not, as preferred.
I elailn as my invention- In a cattle-guard, the guard-hars having a toothed or serrated upper edge, the. said teeth being set or arranged with each alternate tooth lient to one side, and the intervening teeth heut to the other side, substantially as and l'or the purpose lepeeified.
