Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT J osEPH DIL- LoN, of the town of Killaloe, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cattle-Guards, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in railroad cattle guards and the objects of my invent-ion are to devise a simple, cheap and easily constructed cattle guard, which may be laid between the rails of a railway, or in any other place, where it is necessary or desirable to prevent the pas-r sage of cattle.

In general, my invention consists of a in which are secured a number of inclined or beveled slats and also a plurality of eccentrically mounted rollers, locatedabove said slats and having their bearings in the frame, the various parts of the device being constructed and arranged in detail as hereinafter more particularly described.

In the drawings, A represents my cattle guard and consists of two parallel side pieces 10, between which are secured a num ber of inclined or beveled slats B provided with inclined surfaces 11. Located above said slats B, are a plurality of eccentrically mounted rollers C, provided with eccentric pintles 12, which have their bearings in the side 'pieces 10. If desired, instead of mounting the rollers eccentrically they might be loaded on one side. The rollers C are so situated with regard to the slats B, that any object placed on the rollers O would be immediately precipitated upon the inclined surfaces 11 of the slats B, whence the animals foot, will slide below the slat and may only be Withdrawn in a rearward direction.

The cattle guard is designed to rest between the rails 13 of a railway track, and

copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the may be secured to the sleepers 14 by any suitable means but it is to be understood that similar guards might easily be placed on each side of the track to prevent even the approach of the animal.

As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of the invention Within the scope of the claims could be made without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specifications and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

What I claim as my invention is:

1. A cattle guard comprising a frame, inclined slats located therein and smooth rollers located above said slats and extending parallel to the same.

2. A cattle guard, comprising a frame adapted to rest betweeny the rails, slats located therein provided with inclined surfaces and smooth rollers located above and p parallel with said slats adapted to precipitate the feet of the cattle upon the inclined surfaces of said slats.

3. A cattle guard, comprising a frame, slats located therein, provided with inclined surfaces and eccentrically mounted smooth rollers extending parallel with the slats and from end to end of the same adapted to precipitate the feet of the cattle upon the inclined surfaces of said slats.

4. A cattle guard comprising a frame, parallel slats extending across the same and being spaced a distance apart and formed with inclined surfaces, a series of rollers extending parallel to the slats located above the uppermost edges of the slats and adapted to precipitate the feet of van animal onto the slats.
