UNTTEn STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
EVERETT l). MOORE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THOMAS C. CHAPPELL, OF SAME PLACE.
HERMETIC MOUTH-PIECE FOR MAIL -BAGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,580, dated February 26, 1889.
Application filed April 10, 1888. Serial No. 270,184. (No model.)
To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVERETT D. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hermetic Mouth-Pieces and Combinations Thereof; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hermetic seals, and is particularly adapted for the mouth or opening of a; waterproof bag, especially a mail-bag.
It may consist of metal or some other suitable material, and is preferably so constructed as to be light in weight. Ipreferably employ a buoyant mail-bag in combination with said mouth-piece, and preferably place a protecttin sack over the same. To make said bag buoyant I preferably place an annular chamber or chambers either on the water-proof bag or the protecting-sack, which may be filled with air, gas, cork, or any buoyant materialpreferably cork.
For further description of my i nvention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the bag inverted. Fig. 2 is a sectional inverted view showing interior of bag. Fig. 3 is a pespective view of the plate or cylinder to which the bags are fastened. Fig. 4 is a perspective "view of the removable head or cover; Fig. 5, a sectional elevation showingremovable head secured to the plate, to which may be fastened the canvas or waterproof bags, or both.
Similarletters refer to si milar parts throughout the several views.
The bag or pouch may consist of two partsan exterior part, A, and an interior part, B, the mouths of which lap each other and are secured by rivets or screws to the plate 0, Figs. 1, 2, and The exterior part, A,ismade of some pliable material, as canvas, duck, or hide, and is preferably provided with annu lar chambers A A, which are preferably filled with corkpreferably ground cork or some such buoyant substance for the purpose of floating thebag. A handle orgrip, A may be secured to the bottom to facilitateitshandling. The interior part, B, is made of some water-proof materialsuch as oil-cloth or rubber or water-proofed canvas-aud forms the receptacle for the matter to be carried. The months or ends of the bugs A and. B are clamped to the plate C by the ring D, which is securely held by rivets or screws, as shown, making an air and water proof joint.
The removable head consists of the plate E, to which are firmly secured the carriers E, which hold the rollers 6. One or severalthickncsses of canvas or duck, G, maybe stretched over this plate and clamped securely by means of the ring E which is riveted or screwed on, as shown. A chain, ll, couples the removable head to the plate C. This plate has openings C, which admit the carriers E of the removable head to enter and brings the rollers in contact with cam-ridges C Figs. 2, 3, and 5. By now turning the removable head in the right direction it is firmly pressed to the plate 0 by means of the rollers c ascending the camridges 0 A gasket, K, Fig. 5, which maybe fastened to the removable head or the plate 0, or just placed between, may serve to make thejoints more perfectly air-tight and water-proof. Staples S S are provided on the plate 0 and removable head E for the purpose of attaching a lock.
The outer or protecting bag may be dispensed with and the chambers attached to or constructed in the waterproof bag; or the chambers may be entirely dispensed with, so that the bag will consist merely of a waterproof bag and its hermetically-sealed mouthpiece.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure, and claim by United States Letters Patent, is-
1. In a hermetic mouth-piece for mail-bags, the combination of a metallic ring, to which the bag is secured, the lower edge of which is cut into two or more inclined planes, and a cover of about the same size and shape as the ring and arranged to rest upon it, and provided on the side next the ring with two or more hooks set rigidly into the cover and adapted to engage the inclined planes of the ring, whereby the cover and the ring are pressed closely together when the cover is turned, substantially as described.
'2. In a hermetic mouthpiece 'for mail-bags, the combination of a metallic ring, to which the bag is secured, the lower edge of which is cut into two or more inclined planes, and a cover of about the same size and shape as the ring and arranged to rest upon it, and provided on the side next the ring with two or more hooks or carriers set rigidly into the cover and provided with friction-rollers attached to them and engaging the inclined planes of the ring, whereby the, cover and the ring are pressed closely together when the ring is turned, substantially as described.
In a hermetic mouth-piece for mail-bags, the combination of a metallic ring, to which the mail-bag is secured, the lower edges of which are provided with a downwardly-projecting flange cut into two or more inclined planes, a cover of about the same size and shape as the ring, and provided on the side next the ring with two or more hooks set'rigidly into the cover and adapted to engage the inclined planes of the flange, anda gasket interposed between the ring and cover,- as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a hermetic mouth-piece for mail-ha 's, the combination of a metallic ring, to which the bag is secured, cut with slots or ways to permit the hooks or carriers to pass through it, the lower edge of said ring being cut into two or 'more inclined planes, and a cover of about the same size and shape as the vring and arranged tore 3131113011 it, and provided on the side next the ring with two or more hooks set rigidly int-o thecover and adapted 'to :engage the inclined planes of the ring, whereby the cover and ringare pressed closely together when the cover is turned, substanti'ally' as described.
5. Inahermeticmouth-piece for mail-bags, the combination of a metallic ring, to which the bag is secured, the lower edge of which is cut into two or more inclined planes, and a cover of about the same size and shape as the ring and constructed of two rings of metal, between which is-riveted a sheet of flexible water-proof material and arranged to rest upon the bag-ring, and provided on the side next to thebag-ring, with two or more hooks set rigidly into the rim of the cover and adapted to engage the inclined planes of the ring; whereby the cover and the ring are pressed closely together when the cover is turned, substantially as described.
6. In a hermetic mouth-piece for mail-bags, the combination of a metallic ring countersunk on the inner edge and provided with a gasket resting in said countersunk space, and having a downwardly-projecting flange the lower edge of which is out into two or more inclined planes, and a cover of sucha size and shape as to'fit the countersunk space in the ring and rest upon the gasket, and having hooks provided'with rollers secured to the sides of the cover next the ring and adapted to engage the inclined planes of the flange, whereby the cover and the gasket will be pressed closely together when the cover is turned, substantially as described.
7 The combination of a hermetic mouthpiece consisting of a metallic ring provided on its lower side withinclined planes, a cover provided on the side next the ring with means adapted Ito engage the inclined planes and press the ring and cover together when the cover is turned, and a water-proof mail-bag secured to the ring, whereby the bag may be sealed so as'to be Water-tight.
lnitestimony whereof ,I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EVERETT D. MOORE.
