Description

v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID A. ROSS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-PLACES.
Specification forming part of Lettersv Patent No. 39,836, dated September 8, 1863.
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID A. Ross, of Ciufcinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Places and Stoves; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description ofthe same, reference bein ghad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication, in which drawings like igures represent like parts of the apparatus.
My invention consists in placing a rotating, curved, or ogee back in an ordinary tire-place, by which means a greater amount of heat is thrown into the apartment to be warmed and a large proportion ot the fuel is saved.
The manner in which I make this application will appear more clearly by reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a perspective, Fig. 2 a front, and Fig. 3 a sectional side, view of a tire-place and grate with my improvement attached.
A is an ordinary grate, set in the usual way. B is my ogee rotating back, resting and rotating upon theJ hooks K K. This rotation is for thepurpose of enabling` it to be thrown back, as represented by .the dotted lines in Fig. 3, to i'acili ate the charging of the grate with i'uel. *As soon as this is done theback is drawn forward untilthe top rests against the front of the tire-place at M. Near the top of the rotating back, andjust below the point where it touches the top of the replace, there is an aperture, F F, for the escape of smoke and heated gases, which is closed,
when required, by a Bap-damper, D, hinged at G, and controlled and regulated by the handle and stem E. It will be seen that the hood C and damper D are both attached to and carried by the back B, although the hood might be attached to the front part of the fireplace. This damper is used to control the heat as well as to regulate the draft and the escape of the gaseous products of combustion. Y
The back B may be made of cast or boiler iron, lire-clay, or any other suitable material. I prefer that it should rest upon hooks instead of hinging it, in order that it may be raised, if necessary, to discharge any accumulation of dirt, soot, or ashes. In order, as far as possible, to prevent such accumulations, I make a dust-flue, H H E, entering below the grate and coming out above the bottom of the rotating back.
The arrows show the direction of the draft.
Having thus fully described my .improvement in all its parts, what 1 claim as my inven tion, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The rotating or movable back B, in combination with the adjuster E, when constructed and operatin g substantially as described.
DAVID A. ROSS.
