FREDERICK A. YOUNG, OF AURORA, INDIANA.
WAGON BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,303, dated February 19, 1889. Application filed uly 2, 1888. Serial No. 278,868. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Aurora, in the county of Dearborn and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in agon-Brakes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of myimproved brake and is aplan view thereof, and Fig. 2 is a side view.
This invention has relation to wagon-brakes; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of devices, all as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings the hounds of a wagon are shown, to which is secured a transverse bar, A, and a loop-plate, B, the bar A being secured upon the front straight portion, 0, of said plate B. The rear or bowed portion, D, of said plate extends backward over the hounds, and is formed with a narrow offset-loop, E, which is located over the middle bar or coupling-pole and which is provided with lugs F F, carrying the pivots forming the fulcrum of a short loop-lever or link-lever, G.
H H are guards attached to the plate 13 and bar A and extending along the sides of said plate over the operating-lever L.
I is a ratchet-catcl'i, which is provided with an eye, a, at one end to engage a ring, Z7, of the plate B, and with a stud, C, at its other end to engage perforations d of said plate when in position thereon. hen so placed, its teeth are upward and serve to engage a pin of the brake-lever to hold it to its work. \Vhen not required-as, for instance, when the bed is on the wagonit is turned laterally out of the way, being then held by a hook, e, of the bar A. This leaves the operatinglever free to move backward and forward.
K is the transverse brake-bar, carrying the shoes L L and connected to the ends of the bar A. by the link-hangers g. A clip, h, around the middle of the brakebar receives through perforations in its branches the threaded end of a rod, 7., which extends longitudinally back to the loop-lever G. Nuts Z Z serve to secure the clip to the threaded end of the rod. The loop-lever G is formed, preferably, in two branches, V V, isometrically bent outward to pass around the sides of the reach or couplingpole, and having at their upper and lower ends lugs In, between which are pivoted, respectively, the short connection .2 and the rear end of the rod it, which extends to the clip of the brake-bar. The front end. of the connection .2 is pivoted to the operating-lever L. By this construction the strain in applying the brakes is confined to the plate 13 and transverse bar A and their lever-connections, and is independent of the coupling-pole or reach.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 15-- 1. A brake'lever attachment consisting of the transverse bar A and the loop-plate B, a pivoted link-lever spanning the cou pling-pole, the rod k, the brak ebar, the main lever L, and the connection 2 from the main lever to the link-lever, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the rear hounds and the coupling-pole, of the plate B, carrying a pivoted link-lever spanning said coupling-pole, the operating-lever L, the threaded rod 73 and clip around the brake-bar, and the connection .2, substantially as specified.
In a brake-lever attachment, the combination, with the lever L and the perforated plate I having a ring, I), of the adjustable ratchet-catch I, engaging said ring at one end and provided at its other end with a stud, c, to engage the perforation of the plate B, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
