SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,229, dated February 19, 1889.

Be it kn own that I, MATTHEW C. CHAMBERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drawing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in drawing-presses, and by means of this improvement the articles formed by the press are prevented from clinging to the punch or press, asset forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a drawing-press. Fig. 2 is a detail view of a stripper. Fig. 3 is a section along the line 00 a", Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a Yiew similar to Fig. 1, showingparts in a different position than in Fig. 1.

In the drawings, the letter A indicates a die or form. The plunger B, with its head G, acts as a presser to form or draw an article such as a sheet-metal vessel or cup, D. The presser is provided with an internal stripper, E,which, as seen in Fig. 4, serves to strip the article D from the presser, so that such article will not cling to the presser during its return-stroke. The presser reciprocates in guides I, suitably supported, as by a frame, (not shown,) of any suitable well-known construction. The stem F of the stripper E has a pin, G, running in a slot, H, of the presser. The presser is hollow to accommodate the stem F. One of the guides 1 supports a pivot, K, carrying a detent, L. the stripper E, with its stem and pin G, move with the presser, and the detent L is swung f against the resistance of the spring M to allow the pin G to pass. lVhen the pin G has passed the detent L, the spring M forces said detent to the position shown in Fig. 1, so as to retain the pin G. As the presser now moves away from the die the pin G, stem F, and stripper E remain behind, Fig. 4, since the pin G is held by the detent L. The article D is thus stripped from the presser. The 1110- As the presser moves toward the die A f tion of the presser away from the die will 1 cause the release N to strike the lug 0 on the arm P of the detent L, thus pressing the detent L outward against the resistance of the spring M and out of engagementwith the pin G, whereupon the retractor or spring Q draws the pinG along the slot H, so as to bring the stripper E to rest in its seat in the presser, as seen in Fig. 1. The spring Q, is secured at one end to the pin G. The other end of the spring might be secured to a guide, I; but I prefer to secure such other end to a stud, R, on the presser.
\Vhat I do claim as new, and desire to secu re by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the presser and a die, of an internal stripper having a guided stem, mechanism, substantially as described, for holding the stripper and stem while the presser recedes from the die and automatically releasing the stripper and stem during such receding movement, and a retractor-spring connected with the presser and stem for re tracting the stripper toward the presser when released by the holding mechanism.
2. The combination, with a hollow presser, of a stripper adapted to slide in said presser, a pin-andslot connection between the presser and the stripper, a detent, L, for said stripper, a release, N, for said detent, and a retractor, Q, for the stripper, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a hollow presser, of a stripper adapted to slide in said presser, a pin-and-slot connection between the presser l and stripper, a detent, L,-for said stripper, a release, N, for said detent, and a retractingspring connected to said stripper and to the presser for drawing the stripper to the presser, l substantially as described.
