SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,119, dated February 19, 1889.

Be it known that I, ()LLIE BAUGHN, a eiti zen of the United States, residing at Tobias, in the county of Saline and State of Nebraska, have invented anew and usefullmprovement in Potato-PlantingAttachments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvementin potato-planting attachments for corn-planters; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be Inorefully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The obj eet of my invention is to provide an attachment for corn-planting machines which shall be capable of cutting the potatoes and dropping the pieces thereof into hills at regular distances apart, and which shall be light and simple, strong and durable, and thoroughly reliable and eflicient in operation.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my potato attachment, showing the same attached to a corn-planter. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of my improved potato-planting attachment, taken on the line a: a: of Fig. 2. Fig. tis a'seetional View taken on the line y y of Fig. 2.

A represents the front cross-bar of a cornplanter of ordinaryconstruction, having the usual runners, B, and provided with the usual hoppers, C, and the usual reciprocating seedslide, D.

E represents a board, on the ends of which are secured a pair of hoppers, F, the board constituting the bottoms of the hoppers, and being provided near its ends with discharge-openings G of suitable dimensions. The front and rear sides of the hoppers are provided with longitudinal cleats H, arranged at a slight distance above the board E, and the end walls of the hoppers are provided in their lower sides with openings I.

K represents a reciprocating slide-bar,which extends through the openings I, and is guided in the grooves formed between the cleats H and the bottom board E, and said slide-baris provided at each end with a pair of openings,

L, adapted to alternately register with the opening G, and arranged at a suitable distance apart. On the upper and lower sides 'of the slide-bar, at the ends thereof, are secured plates M, which are made of steel or other suitable metal, and are provided with openings N, that register with the openings L.

0 represents a 'pair of cutter-plates, which are arranged transversely in the hoppers, bear upon the upper side of the slide-bar, are over the openings G, and have their ends secured to the cleats H. The said cutter-plates have their opposite sides provided with sharpened cutting-edges. I

P represents a pair of metallic brackets, which are bolted to the outer ends of the cornhoppers, project rearwardly therefrom, and are also bolted to the outer ends of the potatohoppers, and thereby support the potato attachmen't when the same is arranged on the corn-planter, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. From the ends of the board E depend spouts R, the upper ends of which register. with the openings G, and the said spouts are secured to the corn-spouts S, which depend from the cornhoppers, by means of U.-shaped clip-bolts T.

The slide K may be operated by any suitable mechanism, such as are now commonly employed for reciprocating the seed-slide of'a planter, said mechanism being not illustrated with the corresponding opening G, the cut piece of potato therein drops through the opening G into one of the potato-spouts and is conveyed by the same to the ground, as will be readily understood.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a potato-planter, the hoppers having the discharge-opening and the plates 0, arranged above said opening, said plates being arranged transversely in the hopper and having their edges sharpened, in combination with the reciprocating slide-bar K, having the openings L, adapted to register with the discharge-opening of the hopper, and the plates M, secured on the upper and lower sides-of said slide-bar, and havin the openings N eoincident with the openings L, substantially as described.

A potato-planti n g attaehmmlt to cornhoppers, comprising the board E, the hoppers F on the ends thereof, said board having the openings G in its ends, the spouts depending from said board and registering with saidopenings, the eutter-p1ates O,ar1:1 nged transversely in the hoppers above the openings G, the slide-bar K in the bottoms of thehoppers under the (*IIH-OFDIHTOS and having the openings L, adapted to register with the openings G, the breeketearms adapted to be bolted to the hoppers F and to the corn-hoppers to secure the former in rear of the latter, and the clip-bolts to secure the spouts to the dependin g corn-spouts, substantially as described.
