MACHINE FOR FINISHING DECORATIVE NAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,038, dated February 19, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY P. FISKE, of 1V aterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an improvement in Machines for Making Decorative Nails 5 and the following is declared to be a description of the same.
My present invention relates to a machine for making decorative nails, and the same is an improvement upon Letters Patent No. 388,126, granted to me August 21, 1888; and my invention also aims to combine with its improvements to the machine the dies and matrices and the method of cutting the blanks and forming the decorative nails such as is described in my application for Letters Patent filed June 95, 1888, Serial No. 278,122, and in my application filed June 25, 1888, Serial No. 278,123.
In the manufacture of decorative or ornamental nails before my invention and aforesaid patent it has been usual to form the blank for the nail-head in one machine, to make the wire nail by another machine, and to join the head to the wire nail in a third ma chine to form the completed nail. The operations have been attended with considerable expense and loss of time.
In my present invention the blank is cut and the wire nail formed and the blank is stamped to form the head and is joined to the wire nail to form the completed nail all in one machine by mechanism that coacts simu ltaneously, each operation cutting the blank and forming the nail from a previously-cut pushing the cut blank out of the matrix and for insuring its vertical fall, devices for guiding the blank as it falls and for stopping and retaining the same in front of the matrix, in which the nail-head is stamped up and con nected to the shank or wire, and devices for holding and securing the cutting-die and matrix, all of which mechanism or devices are hereinafter more fully described.

A represents the frame-work of the machine; B, the reeiprocated gate or slide-block B, the pitman or connecting-rod; C, the matrix upon the gate B; D, the die to form the inner side of the nail-head; E, the head-block; E, the moving clamp to hold the wire; F, the cam-bar, fastened to the gate B. 2 represents the stationary tubular plug, which passes through the head-block E and supports the die D, through which tubular plug passes the wire to form the stem of the nail. 3 represents a jaw, and at a moving lifter-bar, and 5 a roller connected to the lifter-bar 4 and operated by the cam-bar F, the pitman 01' connecting-rod B being operated bya crank, the parts just named being identical with those described in my aforesaid patent, and I remark that the devices set forth in my said patent for feeding the wire along and the cutters for severing the wire into lengths and pressing up the point of the nail and a head tion of the machine.

I will now proceed to describe the present improvements.
The reciprocated gate or slide-block B carries the dovetailed block C, and said block C supports the matrix C (see Fig. 6) and the upper matrix, M. (See Fig. 5.) The die N acts with the matrix M to stamp out from the strip a blank from which the nail-head is formed, and it is supported by the slotted plate 7, which plate is secured to the headblock E by bolts 8. (See Fig. 3.) This plate 7 is adjustable vertically by the slots inthe same, and is held by the bolts 8, and on said 5 into the position shown in Fig. 1-.

The operation of the parts as follows, starting with the parts in the position Figs. 1 and 2: The metal blank-.. p is fed downwardly through the slotted two-part frame a, its lower end covering the opening in the matrix M and the guide-plate I) being down in the position Fig. 4. The reeiprocated gate or slide-block B and the block U are now moved forward by the pitman or connectingrod B and approach the dies D N. The tinger .J raises the plate I), and the die N cuts the blank from the strip of metal and pushes said blank into the opening in the matrix M. The face of the block f is flat, and the face of the die N is recessed, so that the pressure squeezes the metal su'l'liciently to throw up a central hollow teat, such as shown in Fig. 5 of my aforesaid patent. The gate B and the block C are now moved forward again by the pitman or connecting-rod B, this movement operating the cam-bar F, the roller 5, the lifter -'l-, and the clamp E to hold the wire which forms the stem of the nail. The matrices C and M and the dies D and N new approach each other, and the finger 9 raises the guide-plate b, and the die N, entering, cuts the second blank from the vertically-fed strip and pushes the same into the matrix M, and simultaneously there with the die D forces the previou sly-cut blank into the'matriX C and forms the finished nail-- head and closes the teat around the neck in the manner set forth in my aforesaid patent. The block B now draws back and the matrix. 0 draws away from the nail-head, and the wire forming the nail-shank is fed along through the tubulardie 1), as in my aforesaid patent, and the point is formed and the nail separated and falls down, and at the same time the head and neck are formed upon the end of the wire ready for receiving the next sheet-metal head, as in my said patent. As the finger 9 is withdrawn from the opening 10 in the frame a the spring b causes the plate Z) to descend into the position shown in Fig. 4 and cover the opening in the matrix M, and as the gate B and block 0 draw back farther the bar d, rod f, and block f act to push the cut blank out of the matrix M, so that the same can fall through the slot in the frame a and between the guide-bars it down in front of the openingin the matrix C. The plate I), as the blank is pushed out of the matrix M, prevents the blank falling away from the position desired and insures its vertical fall through the channel provided for it, so that it stops in front of the opening in the matrix 0 ready for the next forward movement to form from it the finished nailhead, and the operations just described are continuously repeated with each forward and backward movement of the reciprocated gate B, one blank being cut out and the previouslycut blank being stamped up to shape and put upon the wire shank at the forward movement, and the blank being pushed out of the matrix and falling vertically into position for making the next nail-head on the backward movement.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the gate B and block 0', of a slotted frame, a, a pivoted guide-plate, b, a spring, I), and a finger for raising the plate 1), substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, in a machine for forming decorative nails, wit-l1 the head-block E, of the slotted plate 7, the die N, connected therewith, and bolts 8, for securing said plate 7 adj ustably to the head-block E, substantially as set forth.
2). The combination, in a machine for forming decorative nails, with the head-block E, of
the slotted plate 7, the die N, connected therewith, and bolts 8, for securing said plate 7 ad-justably to the headstock E, and a proj ecting finger, 9, secured to the slotted plate 7, substantially as set forth.

The combination, in a machine for forming decorative nails, with the reciprocating gate B and the block C, of the die N and matrix M, the slide-block f within the matrix M, the slide-rod fwithin the block 0, and mechanism, substantially as specified, for imparting an endwise movement to the slideblock and slide-rod, whereby the blank cutby the die and matrix and struck up is pushed out of the matrix, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with the reciprocating gate B and dovetailed block 0' and the matrix M, of a vertical bar pivoted to the block 0, a projecting finger for moving said vertical bar, and a block or rod moving through the block 0 and through the matrix M, whereby the blank is pushed out of the matrix M, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, with the reciprocating gate B and dovetailed block 0 and the matrix M, of a vertical bar pivoted to the block 0, a projecting finger for moving said vertical bar, and a block or rod moving through the block C and through the matrix M, whereby the blank is pushed out of the matrix M, and a pivoted plate adapted to set across the opening in the matrix M, so that when the blank is pushed out of said matrix said plate insures its vertical fall, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination, with the reciprocated gate B and the dovetailed block 0 and the matrix M, of the stud c on the back of the block C, the vertical bar (I, pivoted to the stud c, the spring e, the adjustable screw-bolt h, the projecting finger-bar i, the slide-rod f and slide-block f, and the pivoted guideplate 19, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
8. The combination, with the reciprocated gate B and dovetailed block 0' and the matrices C and M, of the slotted frame a, pivoted guide-plate Z) and spring I), and the vertical guide-bars k, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
