To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. H. BRUN- TON, of Elk City, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Grain Measuring and Registering Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved machine for automatically measuring and registering the grain delivered by an elevator connected with a thrashingmachine or grain-bin.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improve ment. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the line in 50 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the improvement 011 the line 3 y of Fig. 2. Fig. i is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2 z of Fig.1. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view of the registering device, and Figs. 6 and T are modified forms of the ratchet-wheels.
The improved machine is provided with a box. A, having a central partition, A, which divides the box into two compartments, A and A of equal size. On the top of the box A, in the middle, is located a spout, B, connected in any suitable manner with an elevator, so that the latter discharges the grain from a thrashing-machine or grain-bin into the said spout B. In the spout l) is held a gate, 0, secured to an oscillating shaft, D, and so arranged that the grain discharged into the top of the spout B can be discharged into either of the compartments A or A according to the position of the said gate O.
In the lower ends of the compartments A and A in the box A are mounted to turn the shafts E and E, carrying the bottoms E and E respectively, provided with side flanges, E" and Ff, respectively, adapted to pass into slots A, formed on the inner sides of the compartments A and A. The bottoms E and E being secured to the shafts E and E, turn with the same and open and close the lower ends of the said compartments 3& and A The bottoms E and E are adapted to open alternately upon a gate, F, secured to a shaft, F, mounted to turn in the lower part of the box A, and the said gate F is so arranged as to open alternately into the hoppers G and G, formed on the lower end of the box A and provided with hooks G 011 which the bags into which the measured grain is to be filled are hung. The free end of the gate F is adapted to rest alternately on the transverse bars F and F secured in the box A, and on the said bars F and F also .rest thelowcr ends of the swing ing'bottoms E and E, respectively.
On top of the box A is arranged a suitablyconstrueted frame, A", in which are mounted to turn the shafts H and H, the lower ends of which extend through the top of the box A into the compartments A and A On the inner ends of the shafts H and II are secured the disks H and H each made of two halves, H bent in the form of an 8, as is plainly shown in The two halves ll of each disk H' and H are placed in opposite directions, so that their bent ends extend up and down, as shown in the said Fig. 3. On the shafts H and H are secured the gear-wheels J and J, meshing into the intermediate gear-wheels, J and J respectively, which mesh into a central gear wheel, J secured to a shaft, J mounted in suitable bearin in the frame A, and on the other end of the said shaft J is secured a bevel gear-wheel, J, meshing into a like gear-wheel secured to a shaft on the thrashingmachine, so that the latter imparts a rotary motion to the shafts II and ii while it is at work, and grain is discharged by the elevator into the spout B.
On the shafts H and ll are secured the collars K K and K K, respectively, between which are held the forked ends of the levers L and L, respectively, fulcrumed at I? on the top of the box A. tend to the front of the machine, and are pivotally connected by the links 3' and N, respectively, with the outer ends of the levers O and 0, respectively, pivoted on the front of the box A, as shown in Fig. 1. The inner ends of the levers O and O, respectively, are adapted to engage the pins P and I secured to the vertical bar P mounted to slide in suitable bearings formed on the front of the box The levers I. and L ex- 9 A. The lower end of the bar P rests on the periphery of a segment, Q, having its fulcrum on the pin Q secured to'the front of the box A. The segment Q is preferably in the shape of a semicircle fastened on a base, Q", in which is the fulcrum Q. In the middle of the semicircle is formed a projection, Q, the ends of which rest alternately on the side edges of the bar P The base Q of the segment Q is pivotall y connected by a link, D with a crankarm, D, secured on the outer end of the shaft D, which operatesthe gate C, located in the spout B, so that when the segment Q swings it changes the position of the gate 0, whereby the grain entering the spout B is alternately discharged into the respective compartments 1 A and A The outer ends of the base Q of the segment Q are pivotally connected by the links Q and Q with the arms Q and Q", secured to the outer ends of the shafts E and E, which carry the bottoms E and E before mentioned. On the arms Q and Q are pivoted the downwardly-extending hooks R. and R, adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchetwhecls S and S, mounted to rotate on suitable studs on the front of the box A.
The ratchet-wheels S and S are provided on their front faces with the pins S and S respectively, adapted to engage alternately the lugs T and T, respectively, secured to the ends of a bar, T mounted to slide longitudinally in suitable bearings on the front of the box A. The bar is pivotally connected with the crank-arm F secured on the outer end of the shaft F, carrying the gate F, above described. The return movement of the ratchet-wheels S and S is prevented by the pawls S, pivoted to the front of the box A, and engaging the teeth of the said ratchetwheels.
On the base Q of the segment Q ispivoted a link, ll, connected with one end of a lever, U, pivoted on the front of the box A, and pivotally connected at its other end with an arm, U adapted to operate the registering mechanism V, secured to the front of the boX A, and being of any approved construction.
The operation is as follows: lVhen the device is in the position shown in the drawings, the gate 0 discharges the grain delivered by the elevator into the compartment A The grain first falls on the revolving disk H which throws it against the walls of the compartment A so that the grain finallyfalls on the bottom and accumulates in the said compartment A hen the compartment A is filled with grain, the latter finally extends to the bottom of the disk H and lifts the same so that the lever L is caused to swing, whereby its front end descends and imparts a swinging movement to the lever O by the link N. The lever O, acting on the pin P of the bar P causes the latter to rise, so that the said bar P disengages the lug Q of the segment Q. This unlocks the swinging bottom E so that the weight of the grain accumulated in the compartment A causes said bottom E to swing downward until its lower end rests on the transverse bar 1. The dowm ward-swinging movement of "the bottom E causes the shaft E to turn so that its arm Q swings downward and causes, by the link Q, a swinging movement of the segment Q in the direction of the arrow a The movement of the segment Q causesthe arm Q to swing upward, so thatthe shaft E is turned and carries its bottom E upward and against the lower end of the compartment A which is then closed. At the same time the swinging movement of the segment Q causes a downward movement of thelink D connected with the crank-arm D, so that the shaft D, carrying the said crank-arm, is turned likewise, and the position of the gate 0 is changed, so that the grain passing into the spout B is now discharged into the compartment A. The upward-swinging movement of the arm Q causes its hook R to turn the ratchet\vheel S the distance between one tooth, and the downward movement of the arm Q causes its hook R to move downward and engage the corresponding lowertooth of the ratchet-wheel S, so that at the next upward movement of the said arm Q the disk S is turned the distance of one tooth. Thus it will be seen that by the alternate upward movement of the arms Q and Q the ratchet-wheels S and S 'are turned so that finally the pins S and S actuate the bar T alternately by means of the lugs T and T, so that the position of the gate F is changed, and the grain discharged from the compartments F and passes on the gate F and alternately into the hoppers G and G, discharging into the bags to be fllled.- Now, if the amount of grain necessary to fill the compartments A and A ishalf a bushel and the ratchet-wheels S and S have each four teeth, then it requires the compartments A and A to be emptied four times before a change of position of the gate F takes place. If the ratchet-wheels S and S are each. provided with only three teeth, as shown in Fig. 6, then a change of position of the gate F takes place for every three emptyings of the compartments A and A. It is understood that when the position of the gate 0 is changed the same operation takes place in the other compartment, A as above described in reference to the compartment A 'When one compartment, A or A is emptied of its contents, as above described, the weight of its respective disk H or H causes its shaft H or ll to descend again. As the grain in the other compartment passes onto the respective disk in the said compartment,
the shaft of the said disk is caused to slide downward and the arm P passes down again onto the periphery of the segment Q. Thus the position of the disks H and H and their respective connections with the bar P become normal soon after the respective bottom E or opens and discharges the grain. The swinging movement of the segment Q imparts a swinging motion to the lever U by the link U, and the lever U, connected by the arm U 2 with the registering device V, causes the latter to operate, so that the emptying of the compartments A and A is constantly recorded in the usual manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a grain measuring and registering ma chine, the combination, with a box provided with two compartments and swinging bottoms held in the said compartments, of arms operated by the said swinging bottoms, hooks pivoted on the said arms, ratchet-wheels operated by the said hooks, a longitudinal bar receiving a sliding motion by the said ratchetwheels, a shaft receiving aturning movement by the said bar, and a gate secured on the said shaft and onto which open the said swinging bottoms, substantially as shown and described.

In a gra-i nmeasurin g and registering machine, the combination, with a box provided with two compartments and swinging bottoms held in the said compartments, of arms operated by the said swinging bottoms, hooks pivoted on the said arms, ratchet-wheels operated by the said hooks, alongitudinal bar re- 5 ceiving a sliding motion by the said ratchetwheels, a shaft receiving a turningmovement by the said bar, and a gate secured on the said shaft and onto which open the said swinging bottoms, and hoppers located below the said swinging bottoms and carrying the bags to be filled, the said gate opening alternately in the said hoppers, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a grain measuring and registering device, the combination, with two hoppers and a gate secured to a shaft and opening alternately into the said two hoppers, of a crankarm secured in the said gate-shaft, a longitudinally-slidingbar pivotally connected with i said crank-arm, lugs projecting from the said bar, and ratchet-wheels having a turning movement and each provided with a pin operating on the said lugs so as to impart an alternate forward and backward sliding movement to the said bar to change the position of the said gate, substantially as shown and described.
