BAG FILLING, WEIGHING, AND REGISTERING MACHINE.

Be it known that I, J OHN R. CAMPBELL, of Troy, in the county of \Vinona and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bag Filling, WVeighing, and Registering Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a fulland exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an automatic apparatus for filling bags, &c., in constant succession, each with a given weight of grain, from a constant supply delivered thereto, and for registering the same; and it consists in the construction thereof, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of one side of my improved apparatus, Fig. 2 being a similar view of the opposite side. Fig. 3 is a de tail of the ratchet-wheel and levers actuating the counters, and Fig. 4 is a partial sectional end view of portions of the apparatus on an enlarged scale. Fig. 5 isa detail of the clamping-levers.
A represents the supply-hopper of my grain weighing, sacking, and registering machine; I3, the delivery-spout from a thrashingmachine, represented as feeding the hopper A.
The hopper A is fitted upon the upper end of two diverging chutes, A A which intersect centrally at the lower end of the hopper, and, diverging, terminate in parallel vertical spouts A A so that their lower ends shall be separated by an interval affording ample room for the movement of the two scale-boards O G, suspended beneath them. These spouts A and A are each inclosed by a case, D, fitted to play longitudinally upon the spout, and whose ready movement is facilitated by means of interposed friction-rol1ers a a. The mouth of the bag E to be filled is slipped over the case D, and it is held fast thereon by means of four sets of clamping-levers, F F, arranged in pairs. The lower lever, F, in each pair is pivoted in a bracket, G, made fast to the case, so that the lower end of the lever may swing against the lower edge of the casing D. Its upper short end above its pivot is curved outward and made to interlock with the lower shorter and similarly-curved end. of the second lever,

F, which is pivoted above the first in line therewith and in the same bracketpiece G. (See Fig. 5.) The outer longer arm of each lever F and F is curved outwardly. \Vhen the outer arms of the upper levers, F, are suffered to drop outwardly from the casing D, the outer arms of the lower levers will be thereby thrown out from the casing; but when said levers F are drawn inwardly the lower arms are made to bear tightly against the side of the casing, and thereby clamp and hold the interposed edge of the bag E.
The outer end of the lower lever, F, in. each of the four sets is attached. by means of cords or chains to a corner of one of the scale-boards C. The outer ends of the two upper levers, F F, upon one side of the spout are connected by cords or chains with the opposite ends of one of two rocking beams, H H, secured to each end of a central pivot rod or shaft, H extending transversely through the hopper A immediately at and upon the apex or central ridge formed by the intersection of the inner sides of the two diverging chutes A and A (See Fig. 1.)
Within the hopper a gate, J, (see Fig. 2,) is secured to the pivot rod or shaft H at right angles to the rocking beams H H. This gate .is of such dimensions as to fit closely within the hopper and to turn upon the pivot from side to side, so as to completely close the mouth of one chute or the other, and by its inclination direct the grain within the hopper into the mouth of the open chute. (See Fig. 2.)
A scale beam, K, Fig. 2, is suspended from a suitable bracket, K, secured to the face of one of the chutes A, so that its inner end shall project to a point under the central pivot-rod, H", and it is coupled by a pivoted link, M, with the outer end of an arm, ll" projecting downwardly from the middle of the rock-beam H on that side at a right angle to said beam,

This arm N is coupled by a link, N, with the lower end of a pivoted lever, O, carrying two pawls, O and O, pivoted thereto on each side of its pivot-pin, to extend and rest upon the notched periphery of a ratchet-wheel, I actuating a train of counting wheels, I? These pawls are so proportioned in length with regard to the ratchet-whce1 as that each movement of the lever N in either direction shall operate to move the ratchet-wheel the same distance without reversal and always in the same direction. the ratchet-wheel I is made to actuate the series of counting disks or dials I I I which are fitted within a glass-covered case upon the side of the hopper and provided with indexhands, so as to indicate by units, tens, and hundreds, respectively, the to-and-fro movements of the lever 0, corresponding exactly with the movements of the rocking beams H H and of the scale-beam K controlling them.
A support, IV, is placed under the scaleboards 0 C, so that when either drops under the weight placed thereon it will rest upon the support and the tension upon its supportingchains be thereby relieved.
In the operation of the device the grain delivered into the hopper from the thrashing machine through the spout B will be directed by the gate J, Fig. 2, into one of the chutes A A, and through it delivered into the bag E, which is fitted upon the casing D, encircling the mouth of the chute, the bag being held fast by the pressure thereon of the lever F, under the tension produced by the weight of the scale-board 0, upon the chains which connect it mediately through the intervening levers F F with the rocking beams II II.
The tendency of the weight ofthe grain flowing into the bag E is to draw down the elevated ends of the rocking beams and straighten and reverse the toggle-joint formed by the levers M M; but the poise and other weights upon the scale-beam K will prevent the joint from straightening until a sufficient quantity of grain has been filled into the bag E to counterbalance the scale-beam, and thereby cause it to tip. So soon as the beam is lifted the rocking beams II II will turn, and by swinging the gate J in the hopper over to the other side will deflect the inllowing grain into the empty sack E.
Each movement of the roelvbeams as they turn at the tipping of the scale beam will, by means of the lever O and its pawls, move the ratchet wheel I and counters forward far enough to indicate one unit in addition to those already counted.
\Vhen a bag is so far filled as to cause the seale-board to drop and rest upon the support \V, the tension upon the clampingdevers F F will be so far relieved as to release their hold upon the mouth of the bag to permit its This intermittent rotation of ready removal. The ready tipping of the scale-beam and roek-beams irrespective of the weight of the bag E is insured by the free telescopic movement of the casing I) over the spout A", facilitated by the friction-rollers a a.
To facilitate the removal of the filled bag from the scale-board, I provide slide-boards T T, (see Figs. 1 and 1,) which are hinged at d to a fixed support, so as to extend out over each scale-board and rest thereon in ahorizontal position when the sealeboard is uplifted, aud drop with it into an inclined position when itdescends. Theswinging ends of these slide-boards may be conneeted to the seale-boards each by means of a horizontal pin, d, passing through the sides of the scale-board O and a transverse aperture in the front edge of the slide-board T.
By means of my improved apparatus I am enabled, first, to fasten securely the tag to be filled to the spout supplying the grain until the desired weight of grain has been poured into it, whereupon the supply is cut off aml the bag automatically released; second, to obtainautomatically an equal weight of grain in each and every bag; third, to obtain an exact register of the number of bags so filled.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the hopper A and diverging chutes A and A, provided with a gate, J, secured toatrausverse pivotal rod or shaft, II", and operating to direct the grain from the hopper into the one chute or the other, and with a scale-beam, K, suitably mounted below said pivotal shaft, of a beam, II, fixed centrally to the end of the shaft over the scale-beam, scale-boards O0, suspended from each end of the beam, an arm, M, projecting downward from its axis at a right angle to its length, and a pivotedlinlc, M, coupling said arm to the inner end of the scalebeam to form a toggle-joint therewith, all substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the rocking beam II, coupled by a toggle-joint, M M, with the end of the scale-beam K upon one side of the hopper A, and its chutes A and A, and with the transverse pivotal irod or shaft II", earrying the gate J within the hopper,of a counterpart beam,I-I,'fixed centrally to the opposite end of the shaft, an arm, N, projecting upward from the center of said beam,a lever,O, pivoted to the side of the hopper, pawls O and O pivoted to said leveron each side of its pivot, a ratchet-wheel engaged by said pawls and actuating a train of counters, I I I, anda link, N, coupling thearmNto the lower end of the lever O, allsubstantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
3.
