APPARATUSr FOR BURNING HYDROCARBONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,336, dated February 5, 1889.
Application filed December 21, 1887, Serial No. 258,579. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs H. BULLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springiield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and usefulv Improvements in Apparatus for Burning Hydrocarbons, et' which the followin is a specilication.
This invention relates to apparatus for securing' the burning of hydrocarbon fuels and the regulating thereof, and particularly to that class thereof wherein air is introduced into the burner in conjunction with the hydrocarbon conducted thereto for securing a combustion issue of the combined air and hydrocarbon thereat, and is especially applicable for use in conjunction with a glassheating furnace; and the invention consists in the combination of various contrivances and their arrangement in relation to each other, all substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which, in Figure l, the hydrocarbon-luirnin apparatus is shown in elevation and partial vertical section as applied for operation in relation to a glass-heating' furnace; and in Fig. 2, a detail inelevation of the steam-valve-operatin g devices is shown, to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
In the drawings, A represents a hydrocarbon-burner, which may be of any suitable constructiou-sueh, for instance, as in the form of a circular casing apcrtured at its u p` per side, and,as shown, is arranged within and in relation to a glass-heating furnace, ll, and the glass-melting vessel or crucible C, which are of the usual construction and arrangement, said burner at its under side being provided with a suitable coupling-such, for instance, as seen at a-forthe proper connection therewith of an oil-supply pipe, I), leading from a suitable receptacle, as E, and an air-supply pipe, F, leading from a suitable air-supply, which in the present instance, and preferably, is an air -eompressing machine of any well-known or approved construction, and as indicated at G, and is to be driven by steam conveyed thereto through a suitable steam conduitI er pipe, H, leading to the steam-chest or piston-cylinder of the compresser.
Intermediate of the air-chest J of the aircompresser and the burnerA the air-pipe F is provided with a regulator, K, the object of which being, when the passage and pressure ot' air through said pipe are too great, to operate on and regulate the supply of steam to the compressor, whereby the air-pressure through said pipe F is diminished and made less rapid. I therefore provide a cylinder, L, into and out oli' which portions of the air-pipe F pass, as shown, and against a certain and stated air-pressure therein a piston-head, M, is maintained by a coiled spring, b, encircling the piston-red N, attached 'to or formed upon the upper end et which is a toothed rack, d, and the parts of the regulator are so arranged in relation to the steam-supply pipe H, which is provided with a tubular valveplug, I?, having ports or slots f therein, and an extended stem, g, upon which a sectorgear, Q, is attached, that the rack-teeth of the regulator piston-rod will mesh with the sector-teeth at all times.
A cock is provided both in the air and oil supply pipes, as seen at 7i and j, respectively, whereby a normal or desirable proportional issue of air and oil to the burner is secured under their proper operations.
It will be clearly iniderstood that if at' any time, under the supply of steam to the compressor, its speed is unduly accelerated, and the air compressed in too great a degree, in accordance with the requirements of the burner apparatus, the pressure thereof upon the regulator-piston will force the same upwardly in a manner to secure, through the engagement of its rod with theseetor on the valve-stem, such a rotation of said valvestem and the valve will shut eff or diminish the steam-supply to the compressor, the action of which will in consequence loe retarded until such time as the air-pressure in the regulator overcome by the reaction of the piston-spring, the change of the position of the parts again insuring an increased steamsupply to the air-compressor.
ll'hat I claim as my invention is- An apparatus for securing and regulating the combustion of liquid fuel in glass-inciting IOO andanalogousfurnaees, consisting ofa burner, and said steam-valve, whereby the feeding of I a liquid-fueliauk, a pipe Connecting said fuelsteam to said air-compressors Yregulated and tank and burner, an air-compressor having a a consequent regulation of the ar-pressure to stemwpipe for conveying' Steam thereto for lche burner issecured, substantially as and 5 driving the same provided with a valve, a pipe y for the purpose described.
