UNITED STATES \VILLIAM RICHARD, OF BLOOMVILLE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MARTIN KOLLER, OF SAME PLACE.
SHEARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,291, dated January 15, 1889.
Application filed August 18, 1888. $erial No. 283,071- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM RICHARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bloomville, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shears; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it app ertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cuttingshears.
The object is to produce shears of such construction that the pivot holding the two blades will be prevented from wearing away, so as to allow'the blades to become loosened, and thus spoil the cutting-edges of the same.
Furthermore, the object is to produce a cheap and reliable device for the purposes above stated.
Heretofore it has been customary to secure the two blades of a pair of scissors 0r shears by means of a single pivot extending through the same, one blade being provided with a screw-thre2uled opening for engaging the said pivot. It has been found in practice that after a short while the aperture in the blade through which the screw passes becomes worn from the reason that the aperture is beveled, so as to allow the head of the screw or pivot to set flush with the face of the blade, thereby presenting but a very small portion of metal at the bearing-point for the pivot to rest against, and that after the screw or pivot has been screwed up to take up this lost motion the wearing continues until the blades wabble or have lateral play, in which event the cutting-edges of the blades, not striking each other squarely, are soon worn or ground off, and thus prevent the shears from cutting.
It is the object of this invention to overcome these obstacles in a simple and effective manner; and tothese ends the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a pair of cutting-shears, as will be hereinafter fully described in the specification, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a view of one of the blades of a pair of shears, showing the same. provided with two cars having openings formed therein. Fig. 2 is a detail view of a clasp or clamp for holding the blades of the shears intact. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a pair of shears intact with the clamp in place. Fig. 4 is an elevation showing the same principle applied to pruningshears, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 00 0c of Fig.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the shears, one blade, A, of which is provided with two ears, a, preferably situated diagonally to each other, the said ears being provided with threaded openings a. In the cen ter of this blade is secured a pivot, a designed to engage an opening, (0 in the other blade, A
B designates a clasp or clamp, which may be made in any desired form, that shown in the drawings being preferred, the under side of which has secured to orformed integral with it two downward-extending semi-cylindrical lugs, b, the distance between the same being equivalent to the distance between the ears of the blade A. At each end of this clamp are formed openings Z), through which extend screws b engaging the threaded openings a in the blade A. These screws perform the double function of holding the clamp in position and also of adjusting the same with relation to the top of the blade A to take up lost motion incident to the wear of the center portion, 19 against which the upper surface of the said blade bears.
In securing the blades of the shears together the pivot a is first secured rigidly to the blade A, and the blade A is then placed on the said blade, the pivot engaging the opening a in the latter. The clamp is then placed over the blade A as shown in the drawings, and screws b are inserted through the open ings Z) and screwed into the openings at in the blade A. If desired, the same device may be applied to pruning-shears, where great strain is constantly employed on the rivet, 5
and it will be found highly useful and effective for that purpose. It will thus be seen that the opening which forms the bearing for the blade is of the same diameter through its entire length, thus preventing rapid or uneven wearing, which would be the case were the cone-shaped opening employed, as in shears of the ordinary construction, and that the clamp serves to hold the blades intact against any lateral play. Should the blade A become worn away by coming in contact with the under surface of the clamp, it will be only necessary to turn the adjListing-screws b and thus take up any lost motion.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a pair of shears the combination, with the blade A',provided with the stationary pivot (0 and the integral internal]y-threaded ears u 1
