- Another advantage gained is, that the boot or gaiter may be more easily put on while in a sitting posture, as it requires but little stooping down or leaning over to do this, since with the knee joint bent, the toes downward, and the heel elevated, this improved boot or gaiter may be put on and laced or buttoned up with but a slight movement of the body and with but little inconvenience or discomfort. This is particularly advantageous to ladies as they are thereby saved the necessity of eX- posing their ankles.

JAMES P. HERRON, OF vWA.SIIDYG'IOIY, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR 'IO HIMSELF AND DANIEL E. SOMES, OF SAME PLACE.
BOOT AND GAITER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES l). HnRRoN, of lTashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boots or Gaiters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof,l reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is so to make a boot or gaiter, that it shall be more easily put on, and better fitted to the ankle than any heretofore invented. To accomplish this object- I make the boot or gaiter of the ordinary shape, but, instead of having the opening in front or at the side and buttoned or laced up, or instead of having no slit as in the common boot or in the elast-ic congress boot I make the opening o, in the back of the boot, as represented in Figure l, which may be closed up, when the boot is, upon the foot, either by means of buttons, as shown by a, a, a, &c., buckles, lacings, or in any other convenient way.
The advantages gained by this improved boot or gaiter over those heretofore invented may be stated as follows :-Jlst. The boot or gaiter made as above described is more easily and neatly fitted or accommodated to the shape of the ankle and leg, and at the same time more easily drawn or put upon the foot. 2nd. While the elastics used in the s-called congress boot hinder the circulation of the blood when the boot is new, and after being worn awhile become too much relaxed, losing their proper shape and destroying the beauty and fit of the boot, this improved boot or gaiter of mine is not subject to these objections, but remains the same easy lit. 3rd. In walking on tiptoe in water the wearers of my gaiter are less liable to wet their feet as the opening of the boot, being inthe rear, becomes elevated higher above the surface of the street or walk. 4th. Another advantage gained is, that the boot or gaiter may be more easily put on while in a sitting posture, as it requires but little stooping down or leaning over to do this, since with the knee joint bent, the toes downward, and the heel elevated, this improved boot or gaiter may be put on and laced or buttoned up with but a slight movement of the body and with but little inconvenience or discomfort. This is particularly advantageous to ladies as they are thereby saved the necessity of eX- posing their ankles.
what I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent is- The opening Z) in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
JAMES P. HERRON.
