G. W. PARKS.
POCKET BOX.. No. 396,110. P'atented Jan. 15, 1'8
I v w N. Pnzni Fhoto-Litmx v wa-mngm m c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. PARKS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIRAM HOW- ARD AND STEPHEN O. HOWARD, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
POCKET-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,110, dated January 15, 1889.
Application filed October a, 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE WV. PARKS, of Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pocket-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
I will describe a pocket-box embodying my invention, and then point out the novel features in a claim.
My improvement consists in a box having a compartment or chamber for matches, a compartment or chamber for postage-stamps formed in one side of the match-chamber by bending the material of the box, a cover for r 5 the latter, and a cover for the match compartment or chamber designed, when closed, to retain the stamp-chamber cover in place.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a box embodying my improvement with the covers closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view with both covers open. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a trans verse section.
Similar letters of reference designate corre sponding parts in all the figures.
A designates the body of the box. B designates a cover hinged to the upper end of the body A at one side.
C designates a spring secured to the body near the lower part and pressing at the upper end against a projection, D, affixed to the cover B.
The box as thus far described is substantially like a common form of pocket matchbox. It is, however, provided with a chamber or compartment, E, in one side, which is closed at its ends. This is formed by bending a portion of that side inwardly, or by forming a hole in one side from the upper edge nearly Serial No. 287,551. (No model.)
to the bottom, and securing a bent strip of metal in rear of said hole. This inwardlybent portion or strip forms a partition between the main chamber or compartment of the box which is intended for receiving matches, and the smaller compartment or chamber, E,which is adapted for the reception of postage-stamps.
The sideedges of the compartment or chamber E are provided with grooves. A sliding cover, F, is fitted in these grooves. The cover and the upper end of the back of the stamp compartment or chamber are shown as provided with stops G, which preclude the entire removal of the cover F.
When the cover F is slid down to close the stamp compartment or chamber, the main cover B may be swung down to close the match compartment or chamber. It will then extend across the upper edge of the cover F of the stamp compartment or chamber and retain it in posit-ion.
lVhatI claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A box having a compartment or chamber for matches, having an inwardly-bent portion forming a compartment or chamber for postage-stamps closed at its ends, a sliding cover for the latter, a swinging cover for the match compartment or chamber, the said swinging cover extending across the said sliding cover when the compartments or chambers are closed, and stops for preventing the entire removal of the sliding cover, substantially as specified.
GEORGE W. PARKS.
