UNITED STATES PATENT Grates,
CHARLES MARION \VOOLVORTH, OF OTTUMlVA, IOVA.
DRILLING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,018, dated January 8, 1889.
Application filed March 24, 1888. Serial No. 268,423. [No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that LCHARLEs MARION WooL- WORTH, of Ottumwa, in the county of Vapello and State of lowa, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Drilling-llachines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved drill. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail cross-sectional view of the same.
This invention is an improvement in drilling-machines, and its objects are to improve the construction of hand-drills; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of certain parts hereinafter described,
illustrated in the drawings, and particularly specified in the claims hereto appended.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the supportiug-frame of the drill composed of vertical side plates or bars, A A,
which have longitudinal re-enforce ribs or I strengtheuing-flanges a a formed on their outer faces, as shown, which insure the rigidity of the bars. The bars are connected at their upper ends by a sleeve, B, through which plays a vertical tube, B, which is adjustable through said sleeve, and is locked therein by a set-screw, 5", as shown. In tube B is placed a telescoping rod, 1), which can be ad justably secured by a set-screw, b, in the upper end of tube B, as shown. The lower ends of bars A A are connected to a block, 0, which has a central screw-threaded opening in which plays a threaded rod, 0, provided with a setting-bar, c, as shown. The adjoining edges of bars A at one side are formed with a series of corresponding notches, a a, for a purpose hereinafter shown.
D indicates the screw-threaded drill-shaft, having diametrically-opposite longitudinal grooves, D. d indicates a sectional nut, which is clamped upon shaft D, and through which the latter plays, and this nut is provided with opposite outstanding arms,d,which are placed in opposite notches, a, on the supporting- G designates a bevelgear suit-ably journaled in one side of frame E and engaging gear F. The shaft of gear G is extended beyond the frame and provided with an angular portion, g, and reduced screw-threaded portion g, a slotted crank-arm, G, being engaged on portion 9 and secured thereon by a washer and nut, g, on the threaded portion g, as shown. This slotted crank-arm G, as shown, allows the leverage of the crank to be varied.
From the inner corners of frame E project plates E E, which are much wider than frame E and about as broad as the bars A of the frame are wide. These plates are planed on their outer faces so as to fit closely between the bars A A and brace the frame E against lateral movement, as is evident.
e e represent short lugs standing parallel with plates E, but outside of the same, and adapted to embrace the outer edges of bars A and prevent'the latter from spreading if subjected to great lateral strain.
' It will be observed that the frame E, in connection with the arms of nut (1, supports the drill-shaft, and the frame is in turn support-ed upon the shaft. The gears turn the shaft,as is evident; but all the direct longitudinal strain on the shaftD is transferred through nut 61 directly to the frame A. By reason of the notches a the drill-shaft can be readily adj usted at different heights Without changing the setting of the frame A, and the drill can be set at different angles for boring according to the distance frame E is situated on therod D from nut d.
To dismantle the drill, no unscrewing of bolts is required, the frame E being slipped off the shaft D, and the latter, with its nut cl,
the nut can he taken oft the shaftand the frame E left thereon.
Having described my invention, I eiaim 1. The eomhination of [frame A,havinghars A A, provided with uotehes o and rihs (I, with the drill-shaft I), lint (7, having arms 1, i and. the frame E, carrying the driving-gen ring for said shaft, provided with the brave-plates E E, hearing against the inner faces of the bars A, substantially as and for the purpose 3 described.
The combination of the supporting-frante A, having notched side bars, substantially as described, and the grooved drill-shaft D and nut (I, having outstandingarms (1, with the 1' frame E, carrying the drill-shalt d living-gear and provided with plates E E, hearing against the inner faces of bars A, and hraeing' the frame laterally, and lugs e, :11] eou- 1 strnet'ed and arranged suhst'autialtv as and i for the purpose deserihed.
can he at once removed from the frame A, or i I The eombination oi? the Frame A, (-om posed of side bars, A A, having ri'hs a and. notehes u, and the sleeve 13, adjustable tube 13, and hioek C, with their adjustahie rods I and tubes, with the nut d,haviug'armsd,t he grooved shaft 1), and the frame E, carrying the gears i and G, with their shafts and erauks, and having the ln'aee-plat'es E E, e11- gaging the' inner faces of bars A, and the lugs ei'igaging the outer edges 0t said bars, all constructed suhstantialtv as and for the purpose described.
In t'est'immrv that T eiaim the foregoing as my own I altix Ill) signature in presence of two witnesses.
