SAFETYQBWAKE FDR CABLE CARS.
SPECXFCATON forming part'of Letters Patent No.l 395,76, dated January 8, 1889. Application filed Februar; 24, 1888. Serial No. 265,128. (No model.)
in itv known that i, (,Hns'rnn BULLooK, of Kansas ('ii'y, Wyaiidoiii'e c nnny, Kansas, have invented a new and useful Safety-Brakes ior alile Vars, oi' whieh the foowiugr is a i'ullrehear, and exact deseription, reiineure being had i'o ille aeeonipanying drawings, i'orining a parli hereof.
My invention relates to brakes provided with gripping-jaws Whieh engage a gripping rail; and it may he said to eonsist in the dey Vices and the peculiar combination, construetion, and arrangenient of devices hereinafter set forth, and pointed oui in the claims.
rlhe olrier'i' of my invention ris io seenre Safety for raide 'rara while ascending and desoi ding; inrlin-ed planes.
in the i' airing-o, Figure] is a broken soeiional elevation oi' a cable ear having` my i11- rention applied thereto, the ear shown supposed To he deseendingr an ineline upon a double-track eahle road. Fig'. 2 is a similar View, except that the ear shown is supposed to be ascending' an incline upon a doublei-raek road; and lfig. il is a broken side elevation of a portion oi a enr having' the brake applied thereto.
in this invention there is a special `grippingrail, A, placed nearihe slot B heim'een the ordinary rails, C, and running parallel tliierewith iheentire distance of ine inf-line, or as far asis necessary 'for the safetyof the ear. This rail lie oiL any ordinary Construction; hut I prefer le pro-rido ii u'ii ii a round head orgrip- 'i `1 fr s'iii'zinig u'. iii pair oi' omiosiiely-loeaied are i iroi at r: to a sntuna inn,y l .ended ironithe r oi' the enr ai romaine height. The nier ends of erippiiig-jaws are to Y'on ta et ivi th th e hea d A. o!" a iooeie,r;,wlziei1 rioni their upper ends.
l@ eniialile operaiino-lever, ll, Whirh is L shaped in forni and provided with a suitable notrhed liar, i, for holding; ii. in any desired adjustineni, ha its linut end eonneeied 'in the a wher `l`iid lever is drawn r red ont and improvement in I l i l i i i i l i i i i i ping-rail, as clearly indicated in the several figures. p
V. it is evident that this brake may be used Whenever desired; but as it is more particularly desfgned as an emergency device it is eyident hat need he used only on such oe- Casions as when the grip or cable breaksnvhieh accidents quite frequentlyoeeur. Bya suitable arrangement the frame d, in which the gripping' devices are suspended, can be raised t0 pass over objects that may be on the track when on level portions of the road, and aga-in lowered to grip the gripping-rail when an ineline is reached.
If so desired and preferred, the grippingrail A may he arranged on the outside of the track and raised to a sufficient height to be engaged by the gripping-jaws, which in such case would project' from the side or-sides of the ear or the platform thereof, the construetion being` substa n tially the saine as here shown.
it is evident that numerous slight changes in details, sneh as would suggest themselves toa siiilled mechanic or a person of ordinary intell", ee, could be resorted to Without departing ro1n the spirit and scope of niy invention; henee I wish it understood that I do not confine 'myself to the precise eonstruel ('80 tled to all sueh variations as eonie within the,1
iiolrherein shown, but consider myself entihrake for cable railways, a ,ly-located gripping-jaws secured together at 'their upper ends by a togglejoint and operated by means of an L-shaped lever, in combination with a notched bar for holding said ieyer at any desired yadj ust-nient, substantially as iieseribed,
2. The combination, in a safety-brake for ealole oars, of a pair of oliipositely-loeated grippingjaws connected at their iree ends by means of a toggle-joint, an L-shaped lever IOO which is atrae-hed to said toggle and by which the toggle-joint, and a notched bar f Or holdsaid joniy is operated, and a notched bar secured to the car and adapred to hold said 1e- Ver at any desired adjustment, substantially as described.
3. In a safety-brake for cable cars, the combination of a pair of grimnng-jaws, a stationary rail having a rounded head, a toggle connccting said jaws at their Upper free ends, an L- shaped lever by means of which said jaws are opcraicd, a link connu-.ting said lever to ing the lever ab any desired adj ustlnent, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of lnwo witnesses.
