FRED M. VADE, OF CAMPELLO, MASSACHUSETTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,465, dated January 1, 1889.
Application filed August 3l, 1838. Serial No. 284,301. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRED M. A\VADE, ol' Canipello, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Indestructible Tack Socket-Pieces 'l'or Lasts, dsc., of which the t'ollowing, taken in connection with the accompanying' drawings, .is a specilication.
The object ot' m y invention to provide lasts and other articles in which at and near certain points tacks or nails are frequently driven and witlldrawn with socket-pieces set in the last or other article at the proper place to receive and hold the point of the tackor nail without injury to itself, thus Yforming` a lgood substitute 'for the wood as a holding' mcv dium and completely saving the .last or other article it'rom injury. This objectI l attain by the mechanism shown in the acooinpanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section taken through the center of the last, showing' in v tack socket-pieces A A in place. Fig'. is a horizon tal section (enlarged) taken on line .1' .r ot' Fig'. i5. Fig. il is a vertical section (enlarged) showing' the interior construction of' one ot' 'my socket-pieees. Fig. 1 is a view in perspmtive showing' one ot' the parts.
ln const ruction l prefer to use a metal case, A, shaped as shown in the drawings-t hat is, it crimssts ol a cvlindrical part, u., having' a square chamber, as shown in Fig. 2, and an internal annular disk, 11.. Within the case A,
I place a number ot' flat pieces, B, of metal,
shaped as shown in Eig. et, each having a knifeedge, l.; 71'.. These pieces B are held in place by the annular disk a and the rubber springpiece D D at each side. (See Fig.
The rubber pieces D D hold the knife-edge plates B B with a yielding pressure, so that if a nail-as N, for instance-is driven in they will yield enough to gri p it tirmly and hold it. as well as wood would.
The tack socket-pieces `ma)v be located in the last, as shown, or ma;Y be placed in an)v desired position.
The pieces that I have shown as located on the sole of the last are intended to receive the tacks that serve to hold the inn er sole, S, while the piece at the heel end of the last is intended to receive the nail that holds the vamp V.
l am aware that; heretofore plates ot' springsteel have been inserted in recesses made in lasts for the purpose ot' rcceivin the ends of nails.
In a last or other article in which nails are Atrequently driven, the combination olf the metal case A, havingl a circular exterior and an interior square chamber, with the knifeedn'c pieces .I3 and elastic cushion-i)ier-es D D, substantially as described, and tor the purpose set forth.
