ATTEST |NVENTOR I RQME B. lcHMoND. 5D. W
UNITED STATES PATENT Orricr.
ROME B. RICHMOND, OF DECATUR, LLNOS.
WATCH- REG U LTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,351, dated January 1, 1889.
Application filed May 7, 1888. Serial No. 273,003. (No model.)
T0 all whom it 72m3/ con/0877r.'
Be it known that I, ROME B. RICHMOND, of the city of Decatur, county of Macon, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Microineter Tatch-Regulator, of which the following' is a specification suteiently full, clear, and exact to enable persons skilled in the art to make and use the same.
My invention comprises a graduated are fixed te the watch-plate, an arm vvith its pivot yieldingly connected with the -are and approximately conccntric With the eirele the arc would form if continued, a friction-roller in the arm bearing with a yielding pressure against the outer periphery of the are, and a svvivel-head on the arm between the pivot thereof and the frietion-roller, adapted to carry the svvinging end of an ordinary regulatorpointer, all as hereinafter set forth in detail and specifically claimed.
In the (lrau'ings accoinpanying and forxnng apart of this specification, Figure 1 represents a watch-plate with my device affixed thereto. Fig. 2 represents the device enlarged and detached from the watch-plate. Fig. 3 represents the device in section on (lotted line :v in Fig. 2, the pointer being omitted.
Like reference-letters iudicate like parts in the different (igures.
The Watch-plate is designatcd by referenceletter A, the regulator-pointer by a, the graduated are by Z), the arin by c, the head of the frietion-roller by (7, the roller by d', the swivel-head by e, the yielding pivot of the arm by f, the securing-screvvs for the graduated l are by q g, and the springs that connect the arc With the arm-pivot by 1/ b'. The swivelhead is slotted to receive the pointer, which acts on the balance-spring in the eustomary manner. The head of the friction-pulley has a transverse groove that forms a seat for the driver vvith which the roller is adjusted with relation to the are. The springs b' b' cause the roller to exert a yieldingpressure against the are, th ereby insurin g Constant contact and avoiding stoppages that might result from i eecentreity or rregularties in the surface of the are. The a-rm c aets as an index on the graduations of the are, and, as the sWivel ear- 1 rying the ponter is nearer the pivot than is the are, the motion of the arin 011 the are is greater than the niotiou of the end of the pointer. This peeuliarity enables the pointer to be adj usted with great minuteness, and makes the device a mierometer in faet. By placing the svvivel nearer the pivot the delicacy of the adj ustment is incrcased. By placing the swivel nearer the are the regulating capacity of the device is incrcased, and these faets may be considered in adapting the regulator to different requirements.
From the foregoing description itvvill be understood that the arm with the swivel between the pivot and the are may be used independently of the yielding pivot When the are is true and the pivot perfectly concentric7 and it is obvious that other Well-known forms of Springs may be substituted for those shown Without the exercisc of invention and without atfecting the principle of niy device.
I elaini as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A mierometer Witch-regulator comprising a graduated are, an arni pivoted at or near the center of the circle that the arc would form if continued, a swivel on the arm between the pivot and the arc, adapted to carry 'the regulating-pointer, and means for adjusting the arin with relation to the arc, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A micrometer Watch-regulator comprising a graduated arc, an arxn yieldingly pivoted near the center of the circle that the are Would form if continued, a roller in the arm bearing vvith a yielding' pressure against the are, and means for connecting the arm With a regulator-pointer, as and for the purpose set forth.
In mierometer Watch-regulators, in combination, are b,springs b' b', carrying pivot f,
arm c,pivoted at f, roller cl' in arm c, bearing against the periphery of the are, and svvivel e, adapted to carry pointer a, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I sign my name in the presence of two subscribing vvitnesses.
ROME B. RICHMOD. Attest:
R. B. HosrETLER, J. O. HosrETLER.
