VEHICLE-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,126, dated December 25, 1888.
Application filed October 13,1888. Serial No. 288,013- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB FASNAOHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ludell, in the county of Rawlins and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Brake Gears; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to brake-gears for vehicles; and it consists in the novel c0nstruction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, whereby the brake-blocks are applied to the wheels, and whereby the wheels are prevented from leaving the blocks under the swaying action of the vehiclesprings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a vehicle-body having the improved brake-gear applied to it. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same from below.
A is the body of the vehicle.
B are the wheels, and a are the axles, provided with springs b, which springs, however, may be dispensed with, as this invention is also applicable to vehicles which are not mounted upon springs.
O is the brake-shaft, having cranks c at its ends, and D are the brake-blocks which press against the wheels.
E are the brake-shaft brackets, secured to the under side of the vehicle-body and pro vided with hooks e for the attachment of the stay-rods.
F is a bell-crank lever pivoted on the pin f, projecting from the vehicledoody, and G is a foot-plate provided with the stem g and ratchet-teeth g on the side of the said stem.
H is a double eye at the end of the stem, and h is a pin connecting said double eye to the long horizontal [end of the bell-crank lever F.
I is a catch projecting from the body of the vehicle for the ratchet-teeth g to engage with.
J is a flat spring secured to the body A and bearing against the projectioni of the bellcrank lever, so that the brake-blocks are al ways held clear of the wheels, except when the footplate is forcibly pressed upon. A spiral or other form of spring may be used instead of the flat spring shown, if desired.
K is a rod which is connected to the short vertical arm of the bell-crank lever by the pin k and to the arm L, projecting from the brake shaft 0, by the pin l.
M is a link pivoted to the center of the axle of the wheels, which are pressed upon by the brake-blocks, or the said link may be secured to any central portion of the vehicle to which the axle is secured.
N are the stay-rods, which pass through holes m in link M and are provided with heads 72, so that they may swivel freely in the holes m of link M.
O are flat-sided projections upon the rods N near the swivel ends, so that the rods may be turned by an ordinary wrench. The other ends of rods N have screw-threaded portions n, which. engage with correspondingly-screwthreaded holes 0' in the loops 0, which are passed over the hooks e 011 the brake-shaft brackets. The stays hold the wheels securely in contact with the brake blocks, and the pressure is equalized on both sides of the vehicle by the pivotal attachment of the link M to the center of the axle.
\Vhat I claim is- 1. In avehicle-brake gear, the combination, with the brake-shaft j ournaled in brackets secured to the vehicle-bod y and provided with a projecting arm, cranked ends, and brakeblocks for pressing against the wheels, of the bellcrank lever pivoted to the vehicle-body, a rod connecting the bell-crank lever with the arm projecting from the brake-shaft, a spring for holding the brake-blocks off the wheels,
' and a foot-plate provided with a stem and pivoted to the said bell-cran k lever, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a vehicle-brake gear, the combination, with the brake-shaft provided with the arm L, of the bell-crank lever pivoted to the vehicle-body and provided with the projection e', the flat spring bearing against the said proj ection, the foot plate provided with a ratchettoothed stem pivoted to the said bell-crank lever, a fixed catch for the ratchet-teeth to engage With, and the rod pivoted to the short arm of the bell-crank lever and to the arm on the brake-shaft, substantially as set forth.
3. In a vehicle-brake gear, the combination, with the brake-shaft provided with cranked ends and brake-blocks, of the brakeshaft brackets provided with hooks, a link pivoted to the middle of the vehicle-axle, the revoluble rods swiveled at one end in the said link and having their other ends screw-threaded, and the loops engaging with the hooks on the said brackets and having screwthreaded holes for the screw-threaded rod ends to engage with, substantially as and for the pur pose set forth.
