J. T. & W. D. GABBERT. WAGON BRAKE.
Patented Mar. 3, 1891.
NITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
s'r. ALBANS,
VEST VIRGINIA.
WAGON-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,448, dated March 3, 1891.
Application filed February 19, 1890- Serial No. 341,055- (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMES THOMAS GAB- BERT and WILLIAM DAVID GABBERT, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Albans,
in the county of Kanawha and State of \Vest Virginia, have invented a new and useful Brake Attachment for \Vagons,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brake attach- Io ments for wagons; and it has for its object to construct a brake attachment which may be easily applied to the running-gear of ordinary farm-wagons, hay-racks, and the like, and which shall be simple in construction,
I 5 durable, and easily applied in position for operation.
The invention consistsin the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will hereinafter be fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a plan view of the running-gear of the wagon to which our invention has been applied. Fig.
2 5 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view showing the brake attachment removed from the wagon.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
1 designates the running-gear of the wagon, which may be of any suitable and well-known construction. Said runninggear comprises the front and rear axles 2 and 3, which are connected by the reach 4, which is connected 5 pivotally to the front axle and providedat its rear end with the hound-frame 5, connected in the usual manner to the rear axle and supporting the rear bolster. The front and rear bolsters support the bed-frame 6,
and the axles are provided with wheels 7 of ordinary construction.
Suitably mounted upon the hound-frame 5 is a pair of transverse cross-bars 25, the outer ends of which are connected by straps 9, be-
5 tween which slides the brake-bar 10, the ends of which are provided with shoes 11, adapted to bear against the rear wheels. I
12 designates a forked lever, which is pivoted upon the reach-bar 4 by means of a transverse bolt 13. The arms 14 of said forked lever are connected with the brakebar 10 by means of links, clevises, or in any other suitable manner, whereby the said brake-bar shall be held tightly against the arms of said forked lever, so that there shall be no slack or lost motion.
To the lower end of the forked lever 12 is pivotally connected the rear end of the brakerod 15.
16 designates a casting, which is bolted or otherwise attachably secured upon the front end of the bed-frame [3. Said casting is provided at its front end with a notch or. slot 17, in which is pivoted a vertical lever 18, the lower end of which is pivotally connected with the front end of the brake-rod 15. To the upper end of the lever 18 is attached a rope or chain 19, by means of which the said lever may be conveniently manipulated.
The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed.
Our improved brake attachment, as will be readily understood, may be easily attached to the running-gear of any wagon of ordinary construction by simply mounting the frame, consisting of the cross-bars 8 and the straps 9, upon the rear hound-frame of the runninggear. The brake attachment, consisting of the lever 18, the casting 16, the connectingrod 15, the forked lever 12, and the brakebar 10, may then be easily attached in operative position, as herein described. To set the brake, it is only necessary to manipulate the operatinglever 18, either directly or by means of the rope or chain 19, which may lead to any convenient point.
Means may be provided for holding the brake set; but such means form no part of our invention and have not been shown in the drawings hereto annexed.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a brake attachment for wagons, the combination of a forked lever straddling and pivoted uponthe reach-bar, the brake-bar mounted siiding'iy upon the hound-frame and connected with the upper ends of the arms of the forked lever, the operatingdever mounted at the front end of the Wagon-frame, and a rod connecting the lower end of the opera-ting-lever with the lower end of the forked lever, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own We have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES THOMAS GABBERT. WILLIAM DAVID GABBER'I. Witnesses: ROBERT G001),
