UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE.
SIIAS T. YOUNT, OF IiAFi/XYE'ITE, INDIANA.
SPECULUIVI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,025, dated December 25, 1888.
Application filed August 6, 1887. Serial No. 246,358. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that l, SILAs T. YOUNT, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Lafayette, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improved Speculum, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to an improved means of treating` rectal and vaginal diseases 5 and its object is to so construct the instrument that it may be easily and painlessly inserted, that it may be opened entirely to the point and upon either side independ ent of the opposite one, and to so construct it that it will not pinch upon being closed while in position. I attain these objects in the construction and arrangement ot' parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section of the instrument. Fig. 2 is a view of thelarge outer end, showing the relative positions ot' the `sliding pieces and hand-piece. Fig. S is a transverse section on line .r a: of Fig. l. Fig. i is a side elevation of the instrument with the slides partly drawn out. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through the slides, which are partly drawn out to show the opening between them when in that position.
The body ot' the instrument consists of a base, u, slightly convexed toward the point of the instrument, and two lips, b l). Two slides, c c, are made to pass between the opposite edges of lips l l), and with them form a complete tube rapidly tapering toward a small point when the instrument is closed. The
edges of the lipsl l) l) are made V-shaped and tit into a corresponding groove, d, in each side of the slides c c. The slides are thus prevented from falling inward or outward when being' opened or closed. It will be observed that the ends c of the slides c are turned inward, so that when both slides are fully in the body l) they completely close the opening at the inner end ot' said body, but when wholly or partly withdrawn this end is open, thus allowing an inspection beyond. thumb-piece, el, is attached to each slide for convenience in opening or closing. A handle-piece,f, is attached to the base a, by which the instrument may be conveniently snpported when being operated.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a speculum with one or more slides in its sides which may be withdrawn to allow an inspection of the parts adjoining, and do not, therefore, broadly claim such slides; but all of these, as far as my knowledge extends, provide no means for extending the examination by opening the inner end oi' the instrument,
so that the parts beyond maybe examined and treated.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with the body d l) l), of slides c c, having inwardly-bent ends c c', eX- tending to and meeting in a line across the distal point of the instrument, and each slide operating independently of the other, substantially as shown and set forth.
' SILAS T. YOUNT.
