Description

(No Model.)
B. F. L. GRANDJEAN.
WATCH REGULATOR.
Patented Dec. 18, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
EUGENE FRAXQOIS LOIIIS GRANDJEAN, 0F 'IEIENXE, S\Yl'lZElll.AXl).
WATCH REG U LATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,919, dated December 18, 1888.
Serial No. 281,451. (No model.
T0 (0 whom it may concern;
Be it known't-hat LE L'GENE FRANQQIs LOUIS GRANDJEAN, watch manufacturer, of 'Bienne, Switzerland, have invented an Improvement in Regulators for Watches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention applies to the peculiar construction of the regulator-lever and of the bridge that holds the spindle ot' the balance,
and is adapted, also, to hold the regulator-lever, and I construct this regulator-lever in such a manner that it receives and holds the end jewel or stone for the arbor ot the balance-wheel.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a portion of the watch-works with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section, in larger size, through the regulator-lever and the bridge of the watch at the line a" y, Fig. 3 is a plan view, in larger size, of the regulator-lever and part of thebalance-bridge.
The three-quarter plate \Y of the watch, the spring-arbor M, gear-wheels E G, and pinion F are to' be of any desired character. I have represented such as are usually found in stemwinding watches.
but on the top of the bridge, and this rib is undercut or formed as a dovetail, and it is notched to allow for the insertion of the regulator-lever B, having arms at d.
The regulator-lever B has a circular por- I tion, (I, the outer edge of which is beveled to tit within the undercut or dovetailed recess with the annular rib l), and there is a segmental channel, c, within the circular portion (1 ot' the lever and a space extending out from 'this channel between the arms (1 d, as shown in Fig. 3, so that this circular portion d of the regulator-lever is somewhat similar to a split ring, and by pressing the arms (1 (1 toward each other, as indicated by dotted lines in 1 Fig. 3, the ring (7 can be contracted sutficiently I for inserting it into the annular rib Z) or for I removing it therefrom. By this construction I am able to apply the regulator-lever upon the bridge of the balance without the use of screws, and at the same time this lever can be I swung one way or the other with ease for vary ing the length of the hair-spring and regulating the watch, as usual, and there is sufficient The bridge A for the balanee-wheel is provided with an annular rib, i Z), concentric with the arbor oi' the balance,
friction between the outer edge of the ring (7 and the inner surface of the rib 7; to prevent the regulating-lcvcr l3 turning or getting out of position by any sudden jar or shake to which the watch maybe exposed. \Vithin the ring (I there is a dislgf, l'ormcd with the rest oi. the regulatingdever, there being a metal tin, c, between such disk f and the ring (I, and this dish f is recessed and provided with a hole countersunk from the under side for the reception of the stone or jewel c, which rests upon the surface of the bridge A and v tormstheendbearingl'orthc s indlco'l'thebalance-wheel. It is often important to be able to 1 remove this jewel to give access to the jewel in the. bridge A, that receives the end of the balaneearbor, for the purposcol. cleaning the parts or repairing the same. This is easily done by simply springing the arms [1 d" to ward each other by the jaws of a pair of pliers and lifting out the regulater-lever from 3 the bridge of the lnilance-wheel, and it will i be seen that there are no screws for holding i in the regulating-lever and the jewel c: hence l the parts can be more reliably made than heretofore, because the screws that have been made use of for holding in the cap-plate and jewel are very small and are liable to be lost or injured in removing or replacing the same, and these I dispense with.
I claim as my inventi(n1 1. The balemee-bridge having a notched and undercut annular rib, b, in combination with the regulator-lever having a notched ring, (I,
fitting within such annular rib. so that the regulating-lever can be inserted or removed I by springing the notched ring, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the balance- 7 bridge, of the regnlating-lcver having an undercut hole in line with the arbor oi the bal ance and a jewel or stone within such hole formingthe end bearing for the lmlaiice-arbor, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 5 name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EL'GENE FRANCOIS LOL'IS GRAXDJEAN.
