JOHN ELMER SMITH, OF TURLOCK, CALIFORNIA.
WATCHMAKERS TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 2, 1911.
PatentedApr. 30, 1912.
Serial No. 642,017.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN ELMER SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Turlock, in the county of Stanislaus and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Watchmakers Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a watch-makers tools, and more particularly to the class of pallet jewel setters.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character in which a watch-maker may quickly and accurately set the pallet jewel of a pallet.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character in which the escapement wheel of a watch and the pallet thereof may be adjusted, one relative to the other, whereby the pallet jewel can be properly and accurately set in the pallet.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character which is simple of construction, capable of being readily and conveniently handled by a watch-maker, and that is thoroughly reliable and eficient in operation, and inexpensive in manufacture.
'lvith these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the construction, com-' bination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of a tool constructed in accordance with the invention, the pallet and escapement wheels being shown in dotted lines supported thereby. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. t is a sectional view on the line H of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the tool. Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the tool.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the tool comprises a flat elongated plate or bar 10, the same terminating at one end in a shank 11 securely fitted within a handle 12, while the opposite end of the plate or bar is downturned to form a bearing ear 13 disposed at right angles to the plate or bar 1O, the latter being provided with a guide slot 14: arranged medially thereof, and extending a portion of the length of the same, the outer end of the slot being of increased size with respect to the remaining portion thereof, for a purpose as will be hereinafter more fully described. Spaced from the inner end of the slot 14 in the plate or bar 10 and integral with the latter are oppositely extending laterally curved arms 15 projecting from opposite faces of the said plate or bar 10, the ends of the said arms 15 being formed with slotted sleeves 16 provided with parallel pairs of ears 17, one ear of each pair having loosely passed therethrough a binding screw 18, the same being threaded in the other car of each pair, whereby on the turning of the binding screw in one direction, the slotted sleeves will bind upon centering pins 18 removably fitted therein. These pins 18 are each provided at one end with a tapering point 19, while its opposite end is formed with an inwardly tapering cavity or bearing seat 20, which is adapted to receive the arbor extremity of a pallet 21 when positioned between the pins for the holding of the pallet in the tool. It is evident that on reversing the pins 18 in the split bearings 16, the points 19 thereof may be engaged in the bearing cavities in opposite ends of the arbor of a pallet 21, should the said arbor be provided with such cavities.
Slidably fitted in the guide slot 14 in the plate or bar 10 is a movable block 22, the opposite edges of which are provided with suitable grooves 23 receiving the longitudinal edge wall of the said slot 14, and
formed integral with the said block 22 are laterally extending arms 24: which are similarly curved with respect to the arms 15 and are arranged in parallel alinement therewith. The outer ends of the arms 2 L are provided with slotted sleeves 25 identical in construction to the bearings 16 and they carry the ordinary binding screws 26, whereby the same may be tightened upon the pins 18 when fitted therein for the secure fastening of the same in the said bearings 25. These pins 18 when fitted in the sleeves 25 are engaged with the arbor 0r pintle of an escapement wheel 27, whereby the same may be held in its true relation to the pallet 21. It is obvious that when the block 22 is adjusted in the guide slot ll, in the plate or bar 10, the escapement wheel 27 may be brought close to or spaced the required distance from the pallet when supported by the tool.
Formed medially in the bearing car 13 on the bar or plate 10 is a bearing notch 28 in which is engaged the turning head 29 of an adjusting screw 30, the latter being in threaded engagement with the block 22 for the adjustment thereof. The head 29 of the adjusting screw 30 is formed with an annular groove 31 receiving the bearing ear 13 when the said head 29 is fitted within the bearing groove 28, thus preventing the displacement of the adjusting screw 30 longitudinally with respect to the bar or plate 10 on the adjustment of the block 22 in the guide slot 14L in the said bar or plate, when it is desired to accurately posit-ion the escapement wheel 27 with respect to the pallet.
Secured to the bar or plate 10 and projecting outwardly therefrom at right angles to the guide slot 14 therein is a jewel supporting bracket comprising a fiat arm 32, the same being provided with a sectorshaped scale table 33 intermediate its ends, which is provided with radial graduated scale marks 34, in its upper face, the center of the table 33 being provided with a perforation 35 which is in true alinement with the points 19 of the pins 18 held in the sleeves 16 on the free ends of the arms 15 carried by the plate or bar 10, so as to receive the arbor of the pallet 21 supported by the said pins 18, and this pallet 21 rests upon the scale table 33, so that the pallet jewel 36 may be properly set in the pallet at the proper angle with respect to the escapement wheel 27. lVhen the pallet jewel has been positioned on the pallet 21, th( watch-maker places the required amount of shellac upon the scale table 33, whereupon the arm 32 is heated to the required degree, whereby the shellac will become melted about the pallet jewel 36, so that when the shellac has become cooled, the same will harden for the setting of the pallet jewel in the pallet 21 in proper position with relation to the escapement wheel.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation will be readily understood, without requiring a more extended explanation.
