UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
RUDOLPH KAISER, OF ANNAPOIIIS, MARYLAND.
HOUSEHOLD SIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,862, dated December 18, 1888. Application filed March 22, 1888 Serial No. 268,129. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH KAISER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Annapolis, in the county of Anne Arundel and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ash-Sifters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to impro'vements in ash-sitters; and it has for its object to provide a cheap, simple, and durable device which may be applied to a barrel, whereby the sifted ashes are received in the barrel.
\Vith this object in view the invention consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of parts, fully set forth hereinafter, in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front view of a sitter embodying my improvements, with the lid raised to display the rotary screen. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional "iew of the same, taken centrally, with the lid closed. Fig. 3 is an end view of the sitter, with the lid raised and the dust-guards thrown back.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the box or case of the sitter, which is attached at its bottom to the cover B, which is adapted to lit the upper end of the barrel. The edge of the cover is provided with a depending fiange, C, which embraces the upper end of the barrel.
The top of the box or case consists of a fiat portion at the center and inclined portions in front and rear thereof, and the lid 1) on the said top is adapted to cover the top or [hit portion and the front inclined portion, thereby being angular in shape.
The ends of the box or case are provided with inclined slots E, and the cylindrical screen F is provided with trunnions G G, which are mounted in these slots. One end of the screen is provided with a crank, H; and I represents a door which is arranged over an opening in the side of the screen, through which opening the ashes which are to be sifted are passed. One edge of this door is hinged to the edge of the opening by' the rings 2' i, and the other edge is secured to the screen (when closed) by the hooks K K engaging staples 7; is.
I. L represent dust-gmu'ds, which are pivoted to the ends of the box or case below the lower ends of the slots, and they are provided with notches M, which engage over the trunnions on the screen and lock the same in the lower ends of the slots. function of these guards is, however, to prevent the dust and ashes which are agitated within the box or case from escaping through the slots. The upper ends of the dust-guards are beveled to fit the angle of the angular lid, so that when the said lid is closed the guards are locked in place and remain so until the lid is raised.
The operation of the improved sitter will be readily understood from the foregoing descriptiou.
llaving thus described my invention, I claim 1. In asifter, the combination of the box or case provided with a suitable cover or lid,
The most importantand having slots E in its ends, the screen provided with trunnious mounted in these slots, and the pivoted or swinging dust-guards covering the said slots and adapted, when the cover or lid is closed, to be engi-tged thereby and locked in place, substantially as specified.
2. I11 a sitter, the combination of the box or case having inclined slots E E in its ends and provided with a suitable cover or lid, D, the screen arranged in the box or case and provided with trumiions mounted in the said inclined slots, and the. dust-guards pivoted at the lower ends of the slots and provided near their lower ends with notches M, engaging the trunnions of the screen, the outer ends of the dustguards being engaged by the cover or lid when the latter is closed, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aliixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RUDOLPH KAISER. Witnesses:
S. THos. MCCULLOUGH, JAMES M. MUNROE.
