SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,809, dated December 18, 1888.

To @ZZ whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JAMES GAGE BAILEY, a i subject ot' the Queen of Great Britain, residl ing at New Glasgow, in the county of Picton j and Province of Nova Scotia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful.Improvement-s in llarrows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to spring-tooth harrows, and especially to the means employed for attaching the teeth to the barrow-frame. The object of my invention is to provide a more cheap, durable, and simple seat or sadranged that the operation of bolting the tooth to the frame and adjusting it upon the seat can be performed with greater facility.
'A further object of my invention is to provide means for indicating and measuring the depth to which the tooth may be adjusted.
lVith these ends in view my invention consists in the peculiar features and combinations of parts more fully described hereinafter, and .pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying' drawings, Figure l represents a sectional elevation of my complete device, the seat being in rigid adjustment at the intersection of the crossbars forming the harrowframe; Fig. 2, a sectional end view; Fig. 3, a top view ot' the seat without the tooth; Fig. Llc, a bottom view; Figs. 5 and (i, sectional elevations of modifications; Fig. 7, a top view of the seat and tooth, showing division marks or graduations for grading the depth of the tooth to any desired measurement; Fig. S, an additional modification of the bolt for fastening the seat to the frame, and Fig. 9 a detail of the modified bolt.
The reference-lettersa a indicate a pair of cross-bars forming the main vframing of the harrow, and which are provided with longitudinal lianges 7;, extending along their opposite edges and above and below their central portion, thereby having' the general outline of a T-rail. The construction of these cross-bars, however, does not form the novel feature of this invention, as they have been shown and described in my previous patent.
The seat b is rigidly fastened to the crossbars by the bolt c, which passes through the cross-bars and binds them together in the usual manner. The seat is made of cast metal, which is, by preference,` cast around the head of the bolt c and holds the bolt rigidly in place, as will be seen in Fig. l. rlhe seat b is provided with an interior recess or chamber,
d, which is given, preferably, the form of a segment of a circle, although the other forms shown in the modifications could be successfully employed. In the upper wall of this chamber is made an Voblong' slot, e, through which passes the tooth-bolt f. The width of this oblong slot e is less than the diameter of the head 'nly of the tooth-bolt, Aso as to retain it within the slot.
For the purpose of inserting and removing the boltf, a transverse slot or enlargement, g, is formed at one extremity of the oblong slot e, as will be more clearly seen in Figs. 2 and 53. The upper edges of the seatare provided with the usual lips, 71, to prevent lateral play of the tooth, and the bottom of the seat is provided with diagonal embossment fi, which iits between the upper flanges of the crossbars and supplies the place of the seat-blocks which have heretofore been interposed between the seat and bar. This embossinent z' will always keep the seat locked in its proper diagonal position in relation to the cross-bars.
The tooth-bolt is provided with a nut, ln, by which the tooth is secured to the seat, so that by tightening or loosening this nut the tooth can be shifted upon its seat. The frame-bolt c passes down through the cross-bars and block o, which is interposed between the bars, and the seat and bars are drawn rigidly together by means of the nut p upon the lower end of the bolt. each other, and their threaded ends extend in substantially opposite directions.

It is not absolutely essential that the tooth itselt should be provided with divisions adapt:- edA to register with those on the seat, as the depth ot the tooth eau be easily determined by the position, ol' the end o'tf the shank.

The nut n is then applied and the shank ot' the tooth seen rely fastened down upon the seat. \\'hen it is desired to shitt the tooth upon its seat for the purpose ot' 'raising or depressing the point otf the tooth, this operation ean be easily pert'mmed by simply unserewing` the nut, whieh will allow the shank s to slide over the faee ot' the seat 'with t'aeility. then it is desired to remove the tooth-bolt, it @an be done by simply renniving the nut n and tooth from the seat, then tilting` the bolt over to one side, and at the same time lit'ting its head out through the transverse slot y. Thus it will be seen that the head ot' the bolt is loosely eonlined within the interior ehamber and has a 'ree lateral movement to adapt tselt' to the various adjustments ot'the tooth.
At whatever depth the tooth may be adjusted the divisions upon the seat will indicate the am ou n t.
It is obvious that many slight Changes in the eonstruetion and operation ot' my Vinvention might be resorted to without departing` from the spirit and seope of my invention. Hence l wish it umlerstood that l do notlimit myself to the preeise Construction herein shown, lult feel entitled to all sueh elntnges as come within the seope oli' my invention.
