IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,1150, dated August 4, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, C. E. MEAD and G. E. STEVENSON, both of Denmark, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, haveinvented a new and Improved Gultivator; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being` had to the'accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side sectional view of our invention, taken in the line x x, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a plan or top view ot the same; Fig. 8, a diminished back view of a portion of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding' parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to an improvementin that class of cultivators which are designed for cultivating crops grown in hills or drills.
The invention consists in constructing and arranging the several parts of the machine in such a manner that the plows may be moved or adjusted so as to conform perfectly to the sinuosities of the'rows, and thereby prevent the plants being casually plowed out, the parts being so arranged as to admit of the plows being operated with the greatest facility, so as to be under the complete control of the operator.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct our invention ,we will proceed to describe it. A represents an axle having a wheel, B, at each end, and a horizontal frame, C, attached to it, said frame projecting asuitable distance in front of the axle A, and secured atits front end to the draft-pole D by bolts a a.
E E are two parallel bars, slightly inclined, which are secured to the inner end of the frame C, and project back from the axle A. The bars E E have the driver-s seat F attached to their back ends. The back of the axle A has a groove, b, made longitudinally in it. extending its whole length, and to the back of the axle two metal plates, c c, are attached,the inner edges of said plates projecting beyond the edges of the groove b, as shown clearlyin Fig. l.
G represen ts a bar, which is secured to the back of the axle A by means ot' a T-shaped metal projection, d, which is fitted in the groove b, and is retained therein by the plates c c, as shown in Fig. 1. The bar G is allowed to slide freely to the right and left, and it has two pendants, H H, attached to it, and alsoa short bar, e, attached centrally to its upper surface, said bar c having a vertical pin, f, attached to it, which pin passes through an oblong slot, g, in a lever, I, the front end of the latter working on a fulcrum,h, attached to the draft-pole D.
To the front part ofthe frame G there are attached two pendants, it', one at each side, and to the lower part of 'each pendant z' the front end of a plow-frame, J, is secured by pins or bolts j. The plow-framesJ are each composed of two beams, 7c k, connected together at their front ends, and having an oblique position relatively with each other, forming a V-shaped frame, as shown in Fig. 2. The pendants i i are fitted loosely in the front endsot' theplowbeams, so that the latter may have a lateral play o r movement, as wellas an upward movement. The pendants H H of the bar G pass down between the beams 7c kot the plow-frames J, as shown in Fig. 3. The back parts ot' the beams k k are connected by cross-bars l, to which cords or chains m are attached, said 'cords or chains passing over pulleysn, attached to the seat-bars E E, and connected to treadles K K, the front ends of which are connected by pins to the front ends ot' the plowframes J.
L represents a shield or guard, which is formed of two plates connected together so as to form a V-shaped open box, rounded at itsv front end. This shield or guard is attached to two vertical rods, o o ,the front rod,0, passing through the draft-poleD, and the back rod, o', passing through the bar c on the bar G.
To each plow-frame J there are attached two standards,pp, inclined and havingplows M secured at their lower ends. These plows M are of curved form longitudinally, and are ot' elliptical shape, both ends being precisely similar, so that the plows may be reversed when one end becomes dull.
From the above description it will be seen that as the machineis drawn along the driver from his seat F may elevate the plows of either frame J by pressing down its treadle K, and may move the plows laterally by operatingthe lever I, the latter moving the bar G, and the bar moving the plowframes in consequence of the pendants H passing down between thev beams 7c k of the plow-frames. The shield or guard L moves with the plow-frames in consequence of its back rod, o', passing through the bar e of the bar G. This shield or guard protects the plants and prevents elods of earth and stones being cast upon them by the plows. Thus it will be seen that the plows may be arranged to follow the sinuosities of the rows of plants, and the plows may be operated with the greatest facility.
