Description

J. H. JOHNS.
ELECTRIC ALARM AND WATER GAGE.
(No Model.)
No. 394,491. Patented Dec. 11, 1888. Fig.1.
which the following is a specification.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HENRY JOHNS, OF NATIONAL MILITARY HOME, KANSAS.
ELECTRIC ALARM AND WATER-GAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,491, dated December 11, 1888.
Serial No. 263,038- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY JOHNS, of National Military lIome,Ileavenworth county, Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric-Alarm IYater-Gages, of I My invention relates to a means whereby either extreme high or extreme low water in a tank or boiler causes the automatic sounding of an electric alarm.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures I, II, and III, respectively, are a side elevation, a vertical section, and a top view of the mechanism by which an extreme rise or an extreme fall of the water within the tank or boiler automatically closes the electric circuit of a magneto-bell. Fig. IY a section on the line IV IV.
1 may represent the upper part of a tank or boiler. 2 is a float, and 3 is the float-stem passing through astuffing-box, at, in the boiler. For simplicity of illustration the float is represented attached direct to the stem 3; but i such float and stem may, obviously, be coupled to opposite ends of a customary fioatlever, if desired. l
Attached tothe top of the said stem is a rod, 5, of wood or other non-conducting mal terial. Fastened by means of set-screws 6 at any desired heights on the rod 5 are two 0011- l ductors, 7 8, which in ordinary conditions of l the Water are out of contact with the brushes and of an electromagnetic sounder-circuit. Such inert condition of the j apparatus is seen in Fig. I. Such extreme elevation or depression of the rod 5 as to: bring a conductorin contact with the brushes for low-water alarm is seen in Fig. II. The said brushes are each one fastened to one of 1 two wedge-shaped plugs or insulators, 9, of 1 any suitable non-conductin g material, secured in dovetail notches 10 of upper plate, 11, of 1 the frame 12, whereby they may be adjusted horizontally by movement vertically to regul late the distance between the brushes. 1
13 ll represent metallic sleeves, which, in-
closing the pillars 15 of the said frame, rest upon the lower plate, 16, thereof. One of these sleeves has a hook-formed catch or lateral projection, l 7, which maybe engaged under the lower conductor, 7, as shown in Fig. I
or under a union or collar, 18, so as to prevent the float striking the bottom of the boiler during inspection or repair thereof.
The stuffing-box l is preferably provided with a stop-cock, 20, whose spigot 19, in the position shown in Figs. I and II, permits the traverse of the stem 3. On removal of said stem for any purpose a quarter-turn of said spigot, by closing the stalling-box passage after said removal of the float-stem, prevents escape of steam at that part.
Associated with the rod 5 may be a customary scale of inches for visual indication of theheight of water in theboilerortank. This I arrange by securing to the collar 18 a pointer, 22, and upon the sleeve ll, by means of bands or otherwise, a scale, 23. These securing-bands maybe clamped by thumb-nuts, which will facilitate vertical adjustment of the scale.
I claim as new and of my invention 1. The combination of the float-stem 3, up-
, per non-conducting portion, 5, carrying the conductors 7 8, and a union or collar, 14*,substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
'2. In combination with the float-stem 3 and j the lower conductor, 7, the sleeve 13, having f the catchlT, substantiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the float stem mounted in the frame and movable vertically, a collar on said stem, and a support, substantially as described, supported on the frame and adapted to move into engagement with said collar, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
JOHX HENRY JOHNS.
