WATER-ALARM FOR BOILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,827, dated March 6, 1894.

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. HATCH, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Tater-Alarms for Boilers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description whereby any one skilled in the art can make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a device that may be attached to a steam boiler and by means of which an alarm shall be automatically sounded when the water in the boiler rises or lowers beyond the high or low water level, the alarm being sounded either at a point near the boiler or at a pointat any desired distance therefrom. u
To this end my invention consists in the details of the several parts making up the apparatus as a whole and in the combination of such parts, as more particularly hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure l is a detail view in longitudinal section through the device showing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a det-ail view in cross section through the device at the upper part thereof and on a plane at right angles to the section of Fig. l.
In the accompanying drawings the letter a denotes a tubular casing provided at its lower and upper ends with suitable means for connection to a steam boiler, and within the case a depending from each end of a pivoted level' c are supported the baskets h in the line of vertical movement of a float or buoy d located Within the casing. The caseis also provided at its lower end with a pet cock a serving as a blow-eut or cleaning device, the upper and lower ends being formed of removable caps.
All of the parts above described are old, and, of themselves, form no part of my invention.
Cn the cap at the upper end of the case a is removably supported a whistle e, a passage e extending from the tubular casing to the whistle. Between the whistle and the casing is located a stop cock f adapted to open or close the passage e between the whistle and casing. There is secured to the under side of the upper end of the casing a fulcrum g to which is pivoted, preferablyT between the cenn ter and one end, the lever c supporting the baskets b. There is also secured to the lever about midway of its length a valve h adapted to open or close the passage e to the steam whistle.
On the end of the casing a is secured a binding post t' that projects downward into the cap, being insulated at t" from the upper surface thereof, a wire i2 extending from this post to a battery Z located in any convenient position. The end of the casing also supports another binding post 7U to which is attached the wire 7a2, this wire extending to a bell m, or like device and from thence to the opposite pole of the battery Z from that to which the wire 'i2 is attached. This binding post is insulated, as at tfrom the metal composing the top ot' the tubular casing that is a good. conductor for electricity. The binding post, 7e, or a part secured thereto, projects downward through the insulating material, as shown at 7st, and on the lower end is provided an outturned foot forming a contact h5 projecting in the path of movement of the lever c, this lever and the fulcrum galso being goed conductors of electricity.
The operation of the device is as follows: When the water in the case a has reached a predetermined level the float d buoyed therein is borne against one of the baskets b tilting the lever and causing the end to bear against the contact 7r5on the lowerpart of the binding post 7s. This movement of the parts closes the circuit, thus sounding the alarmm located at anydesired distance from the boiler. This movement of the lever also draws the valve h from its seat in the passage e and causes the whistle located on the case to be sounded at the same time that the electrical alarm is sounded, provided the stop cockfis open.
I claim as my inventionl. In combination in a water alarm fora steam boiler, a casing adapted to be secured thereto, the baskets depending from a lever, the lever pivoted within the casing, the float or buoy located between the baskets, the contact in the path of movement of the lever, and an electrical circuit including therein an alarm, one pole of the battery being connected to the contact and the other to the casing, all substantially as described.
