COMBINATION MECHANISM FOR CHARGING AND DRAWING FURNACES.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 394,421, dated December 11, 1888.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL T. IVELLMAN, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Mechanism for Charging and Drawing Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which .it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved combination of mechanism whereby a series of furnaces may successively be charged and drawn, the furnace-doors opened and closed for the purpose, in fact the entire labor performed by the aid of one operator stationed upon the traveling app ratus for manipulating the Valve, levers, &c., that controls the movements of the entire combination of mechanism.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation partly in section. Fig. 2 is a plan partly in section.
A represents a furnace in section, supposed to be one of a series of furnaces set in line parallel with tracks a a and B B. 0n tracks a a operates car A', on which car, for instance, steel ingots are brought in front of the series of furnaces. Upon the widely-separated tracks B B operates car B. Upon this car is mounted the frame C, that may be tilted in a vertical plane by operating hydraulic ram D. This frame may also be reciprocated endwise by means of hydraulic motor E, this tilting frame traveling on the side pieces of the car, the latter serving as guides. Upon this tilting` and reciprocating frame is mounted tongs F, with hydraulic motor f for opening and closing the tongs, and, to recapitulate, by means of motor E the frame and tongs maybe moved endwise in charging or drawing a furnace, and by means of ram D the frame and tongs may be elevated or depressed with or without a load, as may be necessary, for instance, in lifting an ingot from off car A', delivering the same to the furnace, and drawing the same from the furnace.
The door G of each furnace has attached cable g, the latter passing over idle-sheaves g', and from thence the cable leads to and connects with cross-head H of air-cylinder H.
From the crosshead is suspended a poise, z, the latter heilig' of sufficient gravity to almost balance the furnace-door. By zulmitting air to the upper end of this cylinder the furnacedoor is elevated or opened, and by exhausting the air from the cylinder the door closes by gravity. lipe I connects with the air-cylinder and with the air-supply pipe I', the latter being located lengthwise of the plant. Each pipe I is provided with a valve, the lever l' of which is in reach of the operator when the charging apparatus is opposite the corresponding furnace-door. 'lhe levers for operating the valves that control the different hydraulic motors are located, for instance, at J, just in front of the operator occupying seat K; also, a hand cable or rod, T, passes just in front of the operator, by manipulating which hand cable or rod is actuated the reversing-leverof the engine that moves the car l5 on tracks l.
The water for supplying the motor is delivered through hose L, the latter heilig' festooned from one carrier, l, to another, and the carriers traveling on tracks Z', located overhead, whereby the hose may be distended or doubled into depending loops to accommodate the movement of car B. It will be seen, therefore, that a single operator occupying seat K can control the whole apparatus for charging and drawing the furnaces, including the opening and closing of the furnace-doors and the movement of the apparatus from one furnace to another, or from the respective furnaces to any point along the line of the track where the load is to be deposited or received. This combined apparatus is intended more especially for charging and drawing furnaces where steel ingots of large size are heated, such ingots weighing usually from a ton and a half upward.
R represents a conveying-table leading to the reducing-rolls, on which table the heated ingots may be placed by the tongs aforesaid, the table having a series of rollers intergeared and operated by power for carrying the ingots to the reducing-rolls.
M is a water-tank, located at such elevation and in such position adjacent tracks B that the tank is within the sweep or automatic reach of the tongs, so that the operator can run the apparatus along' opposite the tank IOO and lower the end of the tongs into t-he tank for cooling the tongs Whenever it may be necessary.
Vhat I claim isl. The combination of mechanism herein vdescribed for charging and drawing furnaces,
including opening and closing the furnacedoors, and consisting, essentially, of-car bearing the tongs and the necessary mechanism and hydraulic motors for operating the tongs, air-motors respectively connected by cable with the respective furnace-doors for opening and closing the latter, a scat provided on the car forqthe operator, the different valves, levers, cables, &c., necessary for the operator to manipulate in operating the entire apparatus being assembled within reach of the operator while the latter is occupying his scat on the car, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a series of contiguous furnaces and tracks extending' along the line `of such furnaces, of car for traveling on such tracks, mechanism, substantially as indicated, mounted on the car for charging and drawing the furnaces together, with `motors for operating such mechanism, air-motors, respectively, for opening` or closing the diiferent furnace-doors, a seat provided on the car for the operator, the different valves and other appliances necessary for the operator to handle in actuating the entire combination of apparatus being all assembled within the reach of the operator while occupying such seat, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with furnaces set in line, tongs for grappling the ingots, and mechanism, substantially as indicated, ,for operating the tongs and charging and drawing the furnaces, of water-tank located within the line and sweep or automatic reach of such tongs for cooling the latter, substantially as set forth.
