APPARATUS FOR CHARGING AND DRAWING FURNACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,419, dated December 11, 1888. Application filed January 30, 1888- Serial No. 262,377. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL T. IVELLMAN, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Charging and Drawing Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to apparatus for charg- These channel-bars and I-beams form, in the main, the frame-work of this car. Connected with the rear portion of channel-bars are uprights D for supporting platforms I), on which latter the operator is posted. To the forward portion of bars C are attached uprights F for attaching the water cylinder or ram F. Next inside of bars C are located I-beams E. These latter are connected in front and in rear, forming a rigid frame, which, for convenience, I will hereinafter mention as frame E. The rear connection of beams E is shaft E, the projecting ends of which are pivoted at e in the frame-work of the car, and the forward connection is shaft E on which latter are mounted the flanged wheels E The protruding ends of shaft E are connected by pitmen f with cross-head f of ram F. By operating the ram the frame F may be tilted on its pivotal bearings and raised or lowered, as may be required.
G are I-beams rigidly connected, and hereinafter mentioned as frame G, the forward portion thereof resting 011 wheels E The rear end of frame G is provided with wheels G, the latter traveling on beams E; also are provided wheels G that engage the under surface of beams E to hold down the rear end of frame G. The axle of wheels G is connected by side arms, g, with the axle of wheels G, and is further supported by a hanger, g, the latter being secured to frame G. (See I Fig. 4.) Between bars G, and rigidly attached to the latter, is water cylinder or ram H, the plunger H of the latter being attached at H to an attachment, 6*, of frame E By operating ram H frame G is run forward or retired rearward, as may be required, in charging or drawing a furnace or for delivering an ingot onto table A of the reducingmill. On top and near the forward end of frame G is attached a heavy plate, I, and to this plate, by means of studs I, are fulcrumed the grappling levers or tongs J, these levers being constructed, being arranged side by side, as shown. My invention also relates to details of construction hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, portions being broken away to show the construction; and Fig. 2 is an accompanying plan, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a left-hand end elevation. Fig. 4 is an elevation in transverse section on line .r as, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan, partly in section, of the plant. Fig. 6 is a corresponding elevation, the furnace being shown in section.
In carrying out my invention any number of furnaces A are located in line, with tracks a just in front of the furnaces, on which tracks ordinary cars, a, operate in bringing, for i11- stance, ingots A or other material with which to charge the different furnaces.

K is a short ram mounted on and rigidly secured to frame G, the plunger of this ram extending forward between and being rigidly attached to plates L, the latter extending forward, respectively, over and under the rearward portion of levers J, these two plates forming substantially a cross-head? Connected with plates L are vertical studs Z and Z, the former being located between and engaging the inner faces of levers J to separate the rear ends of these levers with the forward movement of plunger k. Studs l are located outside and engage the outer faces of these levers to retract the same with the rearward movement ofplunger k. By operating plunger krearward the forward ends of levers J are spread apart, and by actuating plunger 7c forward the forward ends of levers J are made to approach each other to clamp the-ingot or other body, and these levers maintain such clamping position so long as the water-pressure forward is left in ram K.
To recapitulate: By operating ram F the grappling device is raised or lowered, as required, and by operating ram H the grappling device is moved forward and rearward, and by operating ram K the grappling-levers are made to grasp or release the load. At least a portion of pipes h and is, leading to the re spective rams H and K, and the correspond- Pipes f leading to ram F, and the return-pipe for this ram, may be inflexible. These different supplypipes connect with the general supply-pipe M, with valves 7L2, 70 and f of ordinary construction for such purpose, for operating the different rams, the levers of these different valves being within easy reach of the operator. Pipe M connects with a flexible pipe (not shown) that admits of the car traveling along the tracks B. The different returnpipes connect with a common discharge-pipe, M, and the latter may discharge onto the ground; or the water may be conducted from this pipe by means of a flexible pipe to a tank. It is not considered necessary to show or de scribe these different pipes in detail, as I claim no invention on the same, and the arrangements of such pipes for such purpose are well understood in conn ect-ion with hydraulic rams.
Cables N have their respective ends at 'tached to car B, these cables being wound around drums N with a sufficient number of convolutions each to prevent the cables slipping on the drums. These drums are driven by engines P, the latter having the usual reversing mechanism attached, so that the starting and reversing of the engines are effected by a single lever, p.
A small cable, R, is attached to reversinglever 19 of the engine. This cable may be sup-, ported on sheave r, with weights '1" attached at the respective ends of the cable; or the camoved along the tracks ble may be endless and mounted on sheaves, if so preferred. This cable passes just in front of the operator on platform D, and by means of which the operator has full control of the shifting-engine. By operating drums N in the one direction or the other, car B is B as may be required.
I In operating the apparatus the ingots are brought on car a in front of the furnace, where they are wanted. The grappling-levers or tongs, as they are more commonly called, are lowered and made to grasp the ingots, after which the tongs are raised and run forward to deliver the ingots into the furnace, whereupon the tongs are lowered until the ingots rest upon the bottom of the furnace, after which the forward ends of the tongs are separated to release thev ingot,-and the tongs are again raised a trifle and backed out of the furnace. In drawing the furnace the tongs are run into the furnace, lowered, and made to grasp the ingot, then raised until the ingot will clear the furnace-bottom, and then backed out of the furnace, after which the car B is run along tracks B in front of table A, where the ingots are deposited.
By means of this apparatus a great saving is effected in time, labor, and wear and tear of the furnace over the old method of charging and drawing-furnaces; also, the furnaces are set in line, so as to occupy as little space as possible.
hat I claim is 1. In an apparatus for charging and drawing furnaces, the combination, with a car, of a tilting frame thereon, the latter carrying longitudinally movable grappling devices, substantially as set forth.
' 2. In an apparatus, the combination, with a car, of a tilting frame thereon, a sliding frame mounted on said tilting frame, and grappling devices carried by said sliding 'frame, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with furnaces, car, and
apparatus for moving the car along in front of the furnaces, of tilting frame mounted on the car, and a ram for operating such tilting frame, the latter having the grappling devices operatively mounted thereon, substantially as set forth.
. 4. The combination, with car and mechanism for moving the car, of tilting frame mounted on the car, ram for operating such tilting frame, a traveling frame mounted on the tilting frame, and a ram for operating the traveling frame, the latter having connected therewith the grappling devices, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with car, tilting and traveling frames, and rams for operating the same, substantially as indicated, of grapplinglevers fulcrumed to the traveling frame, and a ram for operating such grappling-levers in grasping and releasing the load, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, with grappling levers arranged side by side and separately ful-' crumed inidway thereof, said levers having outward and then downward, substantially as indicated, of rain and connected mechanism, substantially as shown, for operating such I 5 levers, substantially as set forth.
