UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LYSANDER JOHNSTON, OF TYLER, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OE ONE-HALF TO RICHARD ANDRET RIVIERE, OF SAME PLACE.
GROCERS BIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,276, dated December 11, 1888.
Application tiled August 22, 1888. Serial No. 283,489, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYSANDER JOHNSTON, of Tyler, in the county of Smith and State ot' Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grocers Bins, ot which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved bin intended especially for grocers use; and the invention consists, broadly, in a box or bin pivoted so that its upper open end may be conveniently tilted out for the purpose ot' replenishin or taking therefrom, and may as conveniently be pushed back into the casing or framing.
The invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations ot parts, will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l. is a i'ront view, and Fig. 2 a vertical section, ot' instruction embodying my invention.
The easing A may in its general t'eatures be of any desired construction. In the construction shown it is `illustrated as in the t'orm of a counter having shelving above it. This casing has spaces at o opening out of one side and fitted to receive the box or bin. I make the space d with its walls suitably formed to permit the desired movement of the lower front and rear corners and the upper rear corner of the box, this being preferably accomplished by curving the walls at l, 2, and 3 on arcs struck from the pivotal center of the box, stops being provided to limit the opening' and closingl movements ot' the box. The stops for limiting the closing movement of the box are provided at 4f, where the upper rear corner ot' the box engages the casing, and at 5, where the lower forward corner ot' such box strikes the ledge which projects above the said lower corner.
The stops for limiting the opening movement of the box are provided at 6 and 7 for engagement by the lower front corner and the lower rear corner ot the box.
Now it will be understood that any one of the several stops for limiting the opening and the closing movement of the box would, independent of the others, serve its purpose; but by providing the plurality ot stops a better easier action is obtained, and the pivot of the box, when the box is at rest, is relieved in a measure of the weight of its contents.
The box B is shown as rectangular, having an open top, and is pivotally supported in the casing. By preference, this pivot is arranged in advance of the center of the box, and also below such center, so that its specie gravity will tend to close it and retain it in closed position. The pivot may be effected by studs O, as shown, entering` the sides of the box, by Screws, or in other suitable manner. Near its upper end the box is provided on its front face with a suitable pull, D, by which the box may be easily adjusted to open or closed position. It will be seen that the box may be easily opened or closed, that when open it may be iilled or drawn from, and that when closed it is out ot the way and its contents are protected from rats, mice, ants, and the like.
The boxes maybe made of any suitable material or size. The construction is simple and inexpensive, the cost moderate, and the construction is adapted to all uses and purposes for which boxes, barrels, and bins are ordinarily used.
An important advantage resulting from the arrangement ot' the pivots sliown--that is to say, at points below the center and above the lower ends oi' the box--is that by reason of such arrangement a portion ot' the contents of the box may be contained therein below the pivots, so that such portion of the contents will operate in a measure to counterbalance the contents above such pivots, and so render the box easier to adjust on such pivots, as desired. The said arrangement of the pivots also serves to ease the impact and bearing ot' the box against its stops, and by providing a plurality of such stops and arranging them on different radii with reference to the center ot' motion ot' the box the stopping of such. box in its diiterent positions is effected without' any undue strain upon the pivots.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The improved bin herein described, comprising the easing having stops for limiting the opening and closing movements oi' the box, and the box pivotally supported within said easing, the pivots of said box being arranged at the sides thereof at points in advance of the center thereof and between such IOO ter being adapted to hold part of its Contents below and in rear of Such pivots, substantially as set forth.
2. The improved bin herein described, oon- Sisting' of the easing having curved Walls l, E 2, and 3, and provided adjacent to said Curved Center and the lower edge of the box, the lat- Walls with stops for limiting the movement of the box, and the box pivoted in the easing, the curved Walls of the casing being` formed 1o on fires Struck from the pivotal center of the box, substantially as set forth.
L'YSANDER JOHNSTON.
