.UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMILIE POI-IL, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,786, dated December 4, 1888.
Application filed September 4, 1838. Serial No. 284,533. l (No model.)
To CLZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILIE PonL, a citizen ol' the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to improvements in corsets; and it consists in the construction and arrangementot parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the various pieces which are used to make up one side or one half of a corset. Fig. 2 shows the one halt of the corset, and em.- braces the united pieces seen in Fig. 1 Fig. 3 shows the one half of the corset finished.
The letter a designates the front steel-cover,
and l the metal fasteners, which are attached to the steel inclosed by said cover. Adjoining the front steel-cover, a, 'is the breastpiece l), having a straight edge, 2, and on the opposite edge a broadened point, 3, which comes below the bosom-gore c. The two bosomgores c d, which form the pocket, are separated at the front by the lirst straight overlapping strip, e, which extends 'from top to bottom. I This strip e is duplicated, one being on the outer and the other on the inner surface. The central front piece, f, is broad at its top edge, 4, and bottom edge, 5, and curved inward at both edges, forming a narrow central part, (i, midway between the top and bottom.
One of the bosom-gores, d, is on and stitched to the outer surface of one upper corner, 7, This piece and the breast-piece 7) are separated by the first overlapping' strip, e, to the straight edges of which said two pieces f 72 'are attached. The
second straight overlapping strip, g, is in duplicate, like the first one, and separates the central front piece, f, and the back hip-piece,
l 7i, the irregular curved edges otl these latter pieces being attached to the straight edges of the strip g.
The back hip-piece, 7l, from. the top slightl)v tapers to a point, S, near the bottom, where it is narrowest, and from said point it widens, so as to produce a broad lower end, 9, to give the desired fullness over the hips, The eyelet or back piece, fi, is straight and folded longitinlinalluv down its center and is attached to back hip-piece, 7i. All of the foregoing described parts are united, as shown in Eig. 2.
Two crossed strips,j 7;, each containing reeds or whalebones, are stitched to the outer surface of the central t'rontpiece, f, and two similar strips, 7m, are stitched to the outer surface ot' the back hip-piece, 71,. This completes one halt' ot' thc corset, and the other halt (not shown) is like it.
Having described my invention, l claim- A corset consisting of two parts, each of which is composed of the front steel-cover, a, having straight edges, the breast-piece I, having a straight edge adjacent to the cover c, an d a broadened point, i3, opposite said straight edge, the bosom-gores c and C7, overlapping strip e, extending from top to bottom and between the gores c C7, theycentral front piece, jbroadened at top and bottoni and curved inward at both side edges, forming a narrow centra-l part, the overlapping strip g, having straight edges and extending from top to bottom, the back hip-piece, 71, tapering from top to near the bottom, which latter is broadened, and the folded eyelet or back piece, yi, said parts being combined substantially as described.
In testimony whereof` I aitix in v signature in the presence of two witnesses.
, IWIILIE PQIII..
