UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. JOSEPH KAPP, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ELLEN AMALIA KAPP, OF SAME PLACE.
BATH TUB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Ida-393,335, dated November 20, 1888.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, A. JosErH Kiirr, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bath-Tubs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bath-tubs; and the object of myinvention is to provide a bath-tub having a hinged cover or covers on which the necessary toilet appliances can be held, so as to be conveniently at hand when required.
The invention consists in the combination, with a bath-tub, of a hinged cover or covers for the same, and swinging hooks or hangers for toilet articles, soap, &c., on the under sides of said cover or covers.
The invention also consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth herein after, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of the bath-tub provided with my improvement, both covers being raised. Figs. 2 and 3 are cross-sectional views of the same, showing the different cover-sections raised.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The bathtub A is provided with the usual casing, A, to the rear top edge of which the cover-sections O and B are hinged in such a manner that when lowered they completely cover the entire tub. On the inner surface of the cover-section B a series of swinging hooks or hangers, D, are sccured, which are of such construction that when the cover-secti0n is lowered said hooks or hangers extend downward vertically from the under side of said cover-section, and when said section is raised and brought into the Vertical position said hooks or hangers rest flat against the inner surface of said cover. Sponges, brushes, towels, sprinklinghose, and like toilet appliances commonly used while taking a bath are suspended from said hooks or hangers. To the inner side of the hinged cover-section O a swinging 01' hinged soap-dish, I, is secured. \Vhen the covers are lowered, the soap-dish and the toilet appliances are suspended freely below the covers, and the soap, sponges, towels, &c., hanging within the bath-tub will thus become dry in a comparatively short time and are prevented from becoming moldy, as
air in the bath-tub, said cover-sections areprovided with a series of slots or apertures, J, through which the air can enter. The coverscction G,which is at the foot endof the bathtub, is made smaller than the section B. The cover is made in two sections, for the reason that the covers must be raised frequently to permit of drawing water from the cocks at the foot end of the tub, and by making the cover in two sections I avoid the necessity of raising the entire cover every time water is to be drawn. As persons frequently wash their hands under the cocks at the foot of the bath- 1 tub, the soap-dish is secured to the hinged cover-section C, so as to be handy. When the cover-section B is lowered and the cover-see tion 0 raised, a person can take a foot-bath conveniently by using the coversection B as a seat. When a person is taking a bath, the cover-section (3 can be lowered and can be used as a table, upon. which various toilet ap pliances can be placed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a bathtub, of a hinged cover or covers for the same, and swinging hooks or-hangers on the underside of said cover or covers, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a bath-tub, of a hinged cover or covers for the same, which cover or covers have openings, and hinged or swinging hooks or hangers on the under side of said cover or covers, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The eombination, with a bath-tub, of two adjacent hinged cover-sections of different sizes, the smaller of said sections being at the foot end of the tub, and hinged or swinging hooks or hangers on the under sides of said cover-sections, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
A. J OS. KAPP. Witnesses:
