BRACE FOR BEDSTEADS.

such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in braces for bedsteads, and the object of my invention is to provide an attachment for bedsteads whereby the side rails are prevented from springing outward or expanding from any cause, and thus allowingthe slats to fall through.

' The accompanying drawing represents a plan view of a bedstead to which my invention is applied.

A represents the posts; B, the side rails, and O the slats, all of which are of the ordinary construction. Secured to the inner edge of each one of the posts A is a screw-hook, D, through which the endless wire E is passed; and secured to the inner side of the rails B, at or near their centers, are two other hooks, 1), through which the wire also passes.

Supported upon this wire E, about midway between the side rails, B, are a suitable number of rings, G, of any suitable size or material, and through which the wire is passed back and forth for the purpose of changing its direction from one side of the bedstead to the other. The two central rings are sup ported in a horizontal position by means of a tightening-wire,J, which unites them together,

and which wire can be used to tighten the wire E, if so desired. The closer the rings are drawn together by the wire J after the wire E has been stretched the tighter the wire E is drawn. The twoend rings, G, are also supported in a horizontal position by the swivels I.

The wire E, stretching from one of the corner hooks D,passes through the end ring G forward diagonally to the next ring, and then through the hook D, secured to the inner side of the rail B, then through a third ring to the Serial No. 274,812. (No model.)

fourth or end ring, then through the hook D across to the opposite hook, and then through the rings back to the other end of the frame and across to the opposite side. In order to tighten the wire as much as possible and at the same time to secure the ring G rigidly in place, a swivel, I, connects the end ring with that portion of the wire which extends across the end of the frame, and by means of the swivels the wire is drawn as tautly in position aspossible.

Where the weight of the person is sufliciently great to cause the side rails to spring outward in getting into or upon the bed and the slats are rather short,the slats fall through to the floor. Very frequently the movement of the bed causes them to fall through, thus causing much trouble and annoyance. In order to prevent this, I stretch the wire back and forth through the rings and screw-hooks, so as to draw the rails inwardly at their centers and thus compel the wire to take up any expansion of the side rails as fast as it occurs, and prevent the head and foot boards from becoming loose, and to hold the entire bedstead in a firm and substantial position, exerting a pull from every corner and side of the bedstead to the center of the same. In order to enable the wire E to be quickly tightened and loosened in position, I connect to the two end rings and to the wire Where it extends across at each end of the bedstead a swivel, I. These two swivels are placed in a direct line with all four of the rings G, and by exerting a pull in two directions upon the wire E it can be quickly tightened and loosened with very little effort. When either one of the swivels I is tightened, it exerts a pull upon its ring, so as to cause the ring to draw the two parts of the wire more closely together, and at the same time it tightens up upon the wire where it stretches across the end of the bedstead.
