HERMANN LUDWIG PAUL CARL HARTMANN, OF BAY RIDGE, NEW YORK.
FREIGHT-CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,229, dated November 20, 1888.
Application filed July 1G. 188B. Serial No. 280,032.
erating and securing them, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, iu which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.
Figure l is a side elevation of the improvement, showing the doors closed. Fig. 2 is a similar View of one end of the improvement, showing the doors open; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the improvementA on the line p wxofFig. 2.
y Fig. 1.
The doors B and O are provided with hingepivots G G and II H, respectively, projecting at the ends of the car and carrying the pulleys I I and J J, respectively. Over the pulleys I and J passes a chain, K, secured by one end `to the pulley I, wound several times around the said pulley, and then over and around the pulley J, and then the chain is again passed over the pulley I and hangs down from the same, being provided at its lower end with a ring, K2, for taking hold of the said chain.
The chain K is similarly fastened by one end to the pulley I, wound several times around the same, passed over the pulley J and wound around the same, and then passed up again over the pulley I', hanging down in the same manner as the chain K,and also provided with a ring, K2.
On the inside of the top of the car A,ou one or both sides, is held a longitudinal beam, L, on which are pivoted the downwardly-extend- (No model.)
ing posts N and N', reaching at their lower ends onto the door of the car A, as is plainly shown in Fig. 3. Against the posts N and N lean the doors O, O, and O2, pivoted at their lower ends to the floor of the car and adapted t0 swing outward, as is plainly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The doors O, O', and O2 can be secured in their uppermost position, as shown in Fig. 3,by means of bolts P or othersuitable locking devices held on the posts N. The posts N, when disengaged from the doors 0,0', and O2, can be swung upward against the under side of the longitudinal beamLand locked in position by a hook, Q, engaging astaple, R, on the said post N, as is plainly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
rIhe operation is as follows: When the doors B and C are in a closed position, as shown in Fig. l, they are locked in place by a suitable locking device, F, of any approved construction. When the'operator desires to open the doors, he unlocks the locking device F and pulls on either of the chains K or K', whereby the doors B and O are forced to swing open by the action of the chains K or K', respectively, on the pulleys I J or I J respectively. The doorB swings upward into the position shown in Fig. 3, and the door C swings downward, as is plainly shown in the said gure. The door O is preferably made somewhat heavier than the door B, so that the opening of both doors B and C takes place without much pulling by the operator on the respective chain K or K. When both doors are open, the entire side of the car A is open, and the operator can unload from the middle or from either end of the car, as desired. The operator may also swing down either of the doors 0,0', or O2 by loosening the bolts P, held on the posts N and N. When the operator desires to place long articles-such as logs, &c.-into the car, he not only opens the side doors,Band O,but also opens all of the doors O, O', and O2, and he swings the posts N and N upward, locking the same in an uppermost position by the hooks Q engaging the staples RA on the said posts. The entire side of the car is then open, and articles of the same length as the car can be easily placed in the saine or removed from the car.
The door O,instead of being hung vertically, as shown in Fig. 3,niay be placed horizontally IOO on suitable supports-such as the wagonbody-from which articles are loaded into the ear, or on which articles may be placed from the ear. XVhen the door C is in such a horizontal position, ihe door B is in a like position,as they operate simultaneously on account of the connection by the chains l( and K/ with the respective pulleys I I and J J of the said doors B and C.
Having thus described my inventiomwliat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a box-car body, of two doors extending the length of the same, one of thc said doors being pivotcd at its upper end to the top of the ear-body and the other at its lower end to the bottom of the ear-body, pulleys secured at the hinges of the said doors,
