UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT BIERSTADT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
RAILWAY-CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,127, dated August 18, 1896.
Application filed May 13, 1896. Serial No. 591,394. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT BIERSTADT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Oars or other Like Vehicles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to a railway-car the sides and roof of which are capable of being extended toform an enlarged car suitable for purposes of lecturing, camping out, exhibiting pictures or other articles, and also suitable for a chapel or church, theater, &c.
The invention consists of improvements upon the apparatus shown and described in my application for patents, filed October 15, 1895, Serial Nos. 565,806 and 565,807; and it also .consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter set forth and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended. I
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of the car with the roof raised and the sides extended or unfolded. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the car with the roof and sides closed. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the car-floor. to 7, inclusive, are detail views showing mechanism for moving the various parts. Fig. 8 is a section taken on the line 8 8 of Fig. 7.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 denotes the floor of the car, to which is attached the posts or standards 7, which form a support for the roof when not raised or extended. These posts are provided with a telescoping portion 7, which latter, in connection with the ropes and pulleys hereinafter described, support the roof when raised or extended.
9 denotes a portion of the side of the car hinged to the floor, which, when extended or unfolded, forms a wing or extension floor.
denotes a portion of the side of the car hinged to the posts 7, which when extended forms the end of the wing or extension, as shown in dotted lines, partly broken away, in Fig. 4.
Figs. 4
17 denotes a portion of the side wall hinged to the strip 18, of wood or metal, which strip in turn is attached to the portion 9. 16 denotes another strip similar to'18, attached to the part 17. These strips of wood or metal prevent the parts 9 and 17 from touching when folded, and therebyprevent injury to the pictures or other articles which may be attached to the part 17.
2O denotes a portion of the side of the car hinged to the extensible roof 21, which portion when raised forms the wing or extension roof. This part 20 when closed forms the outside portion of the sides of the car, and when closed may be secured by any suitable means.
The extensible roof and the wing-roof are raised simultaneously by means of the mechanism now to be described.
22 and 23 denote beveled gear-wheels, and 24 a screw connection between the wheel 23 and the cross-head 25, which latter slides in the guides 26.
27 27 denote flexible connections between the said cross-head and the cross-head 30, and running over pulleys 28 29, and 31 31 denote ropes or chains connecting said cross-head to the base of the posts 7 t and running over intermediate pulleys 32 32.
33denotes a rope secured to the floor of the car passing over pulleys 34 34 34 and connected to the roof 20. 35 denotes beams sliding in the top of the extensible roof.
The part 9 when extended is supported in part by a flange extending at right angles to the lower part of the portion 15, and it may also be supported by any suitable means additionally, such as posts placed thereunder.
The parts 9 are lowered and the parts 17 raised by the mechanism now to be described.
36 and 37 denote beveled gear-wheels, and 38 a screw connection between the wheel 37 and the cross-head 39, passing between the rods 40. 41 denotes another cross-head, and 42 a pulley attached thereto. These crossheads and 41 slide in the guides 43 43.
44 denotes a rope or chain attached to the floor of the car 1 and passing around the pulley 42, thence around the pulleys 45 45 and 46 and adapted to pass around the pulley 47, and also adapted to be connected with either the outer end of the extension-floor 9 or the upper portion of the sides 17 according as to whether it is desired to raise the part 9 or lower the part 17 as the case may be, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1.
48 is a key, and 49 49 cranks by which the gear-wheels are operated.
The operation of the mechanism described above is as follows: The gear- wheels 22 and 23 are operated by turning the key 48, which causes the cross-head 25 to be drawn toward the center of the car by means of the screw 24. This causes the ropes 27 which run over the pulleys 28 29 to pull the cross-head 30 and the ropes 31 31, running over pulleys 32 32, down, thereby raising the extension-posts 7 n and thus raising the extensible roof. By this operation the braces or beams 35 are gradually forced outwardly owing to the tension on the rope 33, which at the same time gradually raises the roof 20. When the roof 20 is lowered, the beams 35 are gradually forced inwardly by the weight of said roof. The gear- Wheels 36 37 are operated by turning the crank 49, which causes the cross-heads 39 and 41 to be drawn toward the center of the car by means of the screw 38. This causes the rope 44 by means of intermediate pulleys 45 45 and 46 to lower or raise the portion 9 when it is attached thereto. WVhemhowever, the said rope 44 is connected to the part 17 and the screw 38 is operated, the part 17 is raised or lowered by means of this rope and intermediate pulleys 45 45, 46, and 47.
The operation of closing the car is simply the reverse of that of opening it.
The car may be made of any suitable size and preferably is made in three sections, so that the parts may be readily moved into position, and is made of material ordinarily used in the construction of Pullman cars.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. In a railway-car or other like vehicle, the combination of an extensible roof and means for raising or lowering the same, consisting substantially of a gear-wheel, screw, a crosshead, pulleys, and a flexible connection between said cross-head and the said roof, substantially as described.
2. In a railway-car or other like vehicle, the combination of the posts 7, extension-posts 7 extensible roof and means for raising or lowering the same, consisting substantially of a gear-wheel, screw, a cross-head, pulleys, and a flexible connection between said crosshead and the posts 7, substantially as described.
3. In a railway-car or other like vehicle, the
combination of an extensible roof, means forraising or lowering the same, a swinging portion 20, and a flexible connection between the car-body and said portion 20, running over a suitable pulley, whereby when the extensible roof is raised or lowered, the said portion 20 is simultaneously raised or lowered into position, substantially as described.
4. In a railway-car or other like vehicle, the combination of an extensible roof, means for raising or lowering the same, a swinging portion 20, a flexible connection between the floor of the car and the said portion 20 passing over pulleys on an automatically-sliding beam 35, substantially as described.
5. In a railway-car or other like vehicle, the combination of a swinging portion 9, and means for lowering or raising the same into position, consisting substantially of a gearwhcel, screw, cross-head, and flexible connections between said cross-head and the outer end of said portion 9, and passing over suit able pulleys, substantially as described.
6. In a railway-car or otherlike vehicle, the combination of the swinging portion 9, the portion 17, and means for raising or lowering said portion17 into position, consisting substantially of a gear-wheel, screw, cross-head, and flexible connections between said crosshead and the upper part of said portion 17, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereto affixed m y signature, this 24th day of April, 1896, in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT BIERSTADT.
