Description

H. B. JOYCE.
(No Model.)
SHINE BOAT.
Patented Nov. 20. 1888.
NITED STATES HANSON B. JOYCE, OF EVERETT, MASSACHUSETTS.
SElNE-BOAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,158, dated November 20, 1888.
Application filed June 20, 1888. Serial No. 277,674. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Hanson B. J OYOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seine or Fishing Boats; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
- Figure l is a top view of a fishing-boat provided with my improvements, the figure representing the seine as in the act of being set or run out of the boat. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the said boat, the pursinglines of the seine being shown as in the act of being wound on the winches for the purpose of closing in the bottom of the seine.
My improvements consist in providing a seine or fishing boat with a steam-engine, for the purpose of propelling the boat with greater speed while setting the seine than has been attained by the means heretofore employed, and also for the purpose of facilitat ing the pursing or drawing in of the seine, which can be accomplished in much less time and with less labor by attaching the pursinglines to winchesoperated by the said engine than by means of manual power, as heretofore, whereby I am enabled to capture a much greater quantity or a larger number of fishes at each setting of the net.
In the drawings, A denotes the hull of the boat within a room, 13, in which is arranged an ordinary compound steam-engine, O, of the kind used in steam-launches or other boats of a similar character.
D is theboiler, and E the smoke-pipe thereof. The driving-shaft of the engine is shown at F, it having secured to one end of it a winch, G, and to its other end another, G, the latter being splined to the said shaft so as to revolve with it and admit of being moved lengthwise thereon to clutch the driving-shaft to the propellershaft H, arranged and supported in suitable bearings, I, as represented. Secured to the boat are standards K, to which are connected guide or purse blocks L or L, partially around sheaves, in which the pursing-lines a a of the seine pass to and are attached to the winches G G, as shown.
On the top of the boat and near its after part is arranged a supporter, M, in standards I) erected, at each end of which is pivoted a long roll, N, over and upon which the seine passes while being run out of the boat during the setting of the said seine. The supporter M is pivoted near one end to the boat, and the other end of it is connected to the boat by a line, so that the angle of the supporter,or the axis of its roll N with the longitudinal axis of the boat, may be varied at pleasure to facilitate the passage of the seine out of the boat while being set. After the seine has been set in the usual manner, except that the boat has been moved over its course by means of the propeller revolved by the engine, and in much less time than has heretofore been required to do the same by means of oars, both ends of the pursing-line of the seine are to be passed over the sheaves in the purse-blocks, one end of said line being carried partially around the sheave in the-block L and attached to the winch G, and the other end of it carried partially around the sheave of the block L and attached to the winch G. The latter winch, before the commencement of the operation ofpursing the seine, is tobe unclutched from the propellershaft. The boat having been anchored, the engine can now be put in rapid movement and the seine drawn in or pursed at the bottom thereof in the quickest possible time.
The improvements hereinbefore described facilitate in a large degree the setting and pursing of the seine and conduce to the saving of much time, labor, and expense.
Having described my improvements, what I claim is 1. The combination, with a seine or fishing boat, of a steam-engine and boiler-and propeller and its shaft, the driving-shaft of the engine being provided with winches, as described, one of said winches being adapted to slide on the'driving-shaft to enable the clutching of the same to or the unclutching of it from the propeller-shaft for the purpose described, the boat also being provided with guide or purse blocks L L, as shown.
2. A seine or fishing bent, in combination I In testimony whereof Iafllx'. my signatnrein with a roll-supporter, M, pivoted at one end to presence of two witnesses. the boat, a roll secured to the supporter M,
lengthwise thereof, and a line secured to the HANSON B. JOYCE. 5=free end of the supporter and t0 the boat, \Vitnesses:
whereby the angle of the supporter may be S. N. PIPER,
varied in a horizontal plane, as set forth.
