SHIKAKICHI- OHTA, OF IWATA-GUN', SHIZUOKA-KEN, JAPAN.
APPARATUS FOR CAUSING RIVEFFIBOATS TO RUN UP TORRENTS, RAPIDS, AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent:
PatentedOoti 14, 1919.
Application filed January 8, 1917. Serial No. 141,329.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHIKAKICHI OHTA, merchant, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at No. 2 Tokura, Takiyamamural, Iwata-Grun, Shizuoka-Ken, Japan, have invented certain Improvements Relating to Apparatus for Causing River-Boats to Run Up Torrents, Rapids, and the like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for propelling boat, and has particular reference to a device for the boat going up the torrent, object of this invention being to provide a simple and effective device in which the force of running stream is successively utilized so that the hauling main which passes through a plurality of pulleys arranged upon the deck portion of the boat to be propelled is stretched taut, to the end that a continuous hauling in motion may be had so as to advance the boat against the strong current without the necessity of setting the propeller in motion.
These and other objects are accomplished by the device described in the following specification, in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view, illustrating my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detailed view, illustrating the through between the pulleys.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of same.
The invention comprises a plurality of pillar or piling, suitably spaced and posted upon each bank of the river where water is comparatively shallow and rapid, and where the use of propeller is of no avail. The number and the distance between each piling varies of course according to the topographical conditions of environment. Where the growing trees are abundant these piling may be greatly dispensed with.
Over the river and extending between two opposite pilings is stretched a stay line '1 which is mounted by a suitable block memher 2 from which descends a suspension line 3 terminating at its lower extremity with a float 4, so that, owing to the rapidness of the running current, this latter line 3 will malntain slightly inclined position continuously.
Near the middle of the said depending suspension line is secured a hook 5, preferably of flexible material, adapted to support thereto fore part of the hauling main 6 by means of which the boat is to be hauled up against the running current in the manner hereinafter described. As the aftermost end of the said hauling main is likewise fitted with a float l, and in view of the violent stream, enables the same to maintain a continuously stretched condition.
Propelling operation is as follows:
Upon the hatch way of the engine room or any other convenient quarter upon the deck portion of the boat to be operated upon is placed a suitable casing 8 adapted to carry thereon four pulleys, 9, 9 9 and 9, arranged in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2, each pulley being provided upon its own axis with a tooth wheel in such a manner that while the tooth wheel carried by the pulley 9 is adapted to gear with the tooth wheel carried by the pulleys 9 and 9 the remaining wheel carried by the pulley 9 is adapted to gear with the wheel carried by the pulley 9, between these pulleys the hauling main 6 is led through to produce described effect.
The direction of travel of the hauling main 6 for producing the described effect is illustrated in Fig. 2, by the dotted lines, the part passes through between the pulleys 9 and 9 thence runs over and passing around the pulleys 9 and 9, goes out over the pulley 9 so as to cause each pulley to move in the directions indicated by the arrows, whereby the hauling main 6, upon the rotation of each pulley, will be continuously tackled and consequent advancement of the boat is thereby effected.
The pulley 9, is provided with a ratchet wheel 11, with which a pawl 12, is normally in engagement to prevent accidental rotation of the said pulley in reverse direction during the operation. 10 is a suitable snatch block fitted upon the bow of the boat for guiding the hauling main. 7
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is Means for hauling a boat up the torrent or the like and comprising stay lines arranged above and across a stream, blocks having pulleys mounted on said stay lines, suspension lines attached to the block and suspended from the stay line and provided at their lower ends with floats to keep said I In testimony whereof I aifix my signature suspension lines under tension, hooks on said in presence of two Witnesses. suspension lines, a main hauling line fast at SHIKAKICHI OHTA. the upstream end and detachably arranged V Witnesses:
5 on the hooks, and boat carried means to pull H. F. HAWLEY,
upon said main hauling line. HARUTADA YASUMORA.
