The main frame supports the press-box A at one end, has the Windlass-shaft B journaled to it near its opposite end, and is provided between said pressb0x and shaft with a cross guide-frame, G, for the toggle arms, which frame extends beyond the sides of the main frame, as shown.
The guide-frame has top and bottom bars, a c, the latter serving as a support on which the toggle-arms slide in their outward and in- Word movements. These toggle-arms D are pivotally connected to the framing and the plunger,and have their joint-bars cl connected by ropes E E with the Windlass G, said ropes passing inward from the joint-bars d over guide-pulleys ec,and thence back to the windlass, to which they may be secured in any suitable manner.
To the framing is pivoted the toggle-latch F, provided with shoulders f, which, when the latch is properly turned, engage on opposite sides of one pair of the toggle-arms when the latter are closed, and serve to lock the toggles and secure the plunger in its innermost position when so desired. Thus after the bale has beenpressed properly it may be secured until it is properly tied, when by re leasing the latch the rebound of the bale will throw the plunger back,open the toggle-arms, and'leave such parts in position for another operation.
In order to facilitate the operation of the latch F, I provide it with a crank-arm, F, to which is connected a rearwardly -eXtended handle-rod, by which the latch may be operated from the end of the machine. The edges of the latch outside of the shoulders f, at f, are beveled, so that the toggle-arms in their inward movement will lift the latch and pass into engagement with the shoulders of the latch. To permit this movement of the latch by the toggle-arms, I pivot its ends within vertically-elongated slots f so the latch may rise slightly to enable the toggle-arms to pass under the portions f of the latch. To the Windlass G is fixed the pulley or drum H, on which the draft-ropeI is secured. This draft rope passes under the pulley and ti "106 through a guide, J. The team or other power may be connected to it in any suitable manner.
I form the pulley with its outer or rim portion at h thicker than the adjacent inner portion, and arrange on opposite sides of such pulley levers K, pivoted at k, having their short arms provided with shoes to engage the pulley H, and their long arms is extended rearwardly, such arms being connected by cross-bar k fixed to one of the levers and movable through or past the other one.
It will be noticed that the brake-blocks are arranged to be engaged by the rear pair of tog-- gle-arms and pressed thereby into engagement with the pulley II when said toggle-arms are straightened out in their innermost position. When so adjusted, the togglearms cause the brake-blocks to press against and stop the pulley when the bale is pressed. The brake-blocks are preferably made smaller at the top than at the bottom, or beveled from top to bottom, and the toggle-arms also beveled or rounded where they engage the brake-blocks, so such blocks may be readily pressed downward to free them from braking pressure against the pulley. This releasing of the brake may be easily accomplished by lifting the outer ends of the levers K.
The plunger L is provided on its rear side with arms Z,which extend rearwardly through guide-openin gs min cross-bars M,and so steady and guide the movement of the plunger.
The top or cover of the press-box is 'formed of two similarseetions, N, hinged at their outer edges, so they may be opened, and so form a hopper for use in filling the press-box with the loose material to be baled. When closed down, the cover is secured by clam p-bars O, fitted at one end in loops or keepers P, and having their other ends held by loops or catches p, hinged to the framing and turning up over the ends of the clamp-bars, as shown. Byreleasing the hinged catches the clampbars maybe removed and the press-box refilled, as required.
In the under side of the press-box is provided a discharge-opening closed by a hingedv drop-door, Q, which is provided at its movable or swinging end with a-bar, q, or other suitable portion, fitted to be engaged by the latches 1-, arranged at the opposite sides of the machine. These latches are pivoted at their upper ends and adapted at their lower ends to secure the door Q.
To the framing underneath the press-box I pivot two lovers, R, which extend at their outer ends in rear of the latches r, and are connected therewith by a rod or similar connection, 1*. The inner ends of these levers are connected with an operating lover or levers, so they may be simultaneously operated to adj ust the latches into or out of engagement with the door Q. By preference, the connection of such levers is effected in the manner most clearly shown in Fig. 3, and which I will now describe. ' S. Thus it will be seen the levers R are connected through the intervention of the lever S and links .9. By extending the ends of the lever S to the opposite sides of the press the latches may be readily operated thereby from either side of the machine; but it is preferred to extend such lever to but one side of the press and to employ a supplemental lever, S, and link 8', by which the latches may be operated from the opposite side.
It will be noticed that the toggle-arms D at iv their meeting ends on each side are geared togeth er' at 1). This gearing prevents such-ends of said arms from slipping past each other and preserves the joint-bars d at all times in proper relation to the toggle-arms which they connect.
When the bale is pressed and the plunger withdrawn,thelatches 1' may be released,when the bale will fall through the discharge-opening, the door be closed and latched, and the operation proceed as before.
To the under side of the press is pivoted one end of a stake, T, which may belowered at its other end to engage the ground and prevent any backward movement of the machine by the draft on the rope for drawing up the toggle arms. A loop or keeper, 1 is provided for securing the stake elevated in moving from. place to place.
The machine may be used for baling while traveling or moving by keeping a pair of horses on the tongue and another to press the bale, and can in such way be used to bale from a cock or Windrow.
Having thus described my invention, what I claimasnew is- 1. In a baling-press, the combination of the plunger, the windlasspulley, toggle-levers, and connections between said plunger and windlass, whercby the turning of the latter will effect an operation of the former,.and the brake shoe or shoes movable into and out of engagement with the pulley and arranged to be engaged by the toggle-levers, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the pulley and the toggle-arms connected therewith and having their inner edges or faces rounded off, of the brake-blocks, beveled as described, and the levers supporting said brakebloeks, substantially as set forth.
The combination, in a baling-press, of the main frame, the windlass,the pulley thereon, the brake-levers pivotally supported on opposite sides of the pulley and having brakeshoes at one end, the cross-bar connecting the opposite ends of the levers, and the guide J, provided with armsj, for supporting the rear ends of the brake-levers, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, in a baling-press, of the plunger, the toggle-arms connected therewith,
means for operating said toggle-arms, and the latch having shoulders whereby to engage said arms when closed, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
5. In a baling-press, the plunger, the togglearms, and the main frame, combined with the latch F, having shoulders f and beveled portions f, and the vertically-elongated bearings for the ends of said latch, all combined and adapted for use substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, in a baling-press, of the toggle-arms, the framing, the plunger, the latch pivoted to the framing and havingshoulders f, the crank-arm extended from said latch, and the handle-rod connected with such crankspecified.
7. In a baling-press, the combination of the main frame, the cross-bars M, having openings m, the press-box, the plunger having rearwardly-extended arms Z projected through the openings m, the toggle-arms connected with said plunger and with the main frame, and means for operating said arms, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination, in a baling-press, of the framing, the plunger, the toggle-arms connected with said framing and plunger, the Windlass-shaft and pulley, the independent cords connecting such Windlass with the opposite pairs of toggle-arms, the guide-pulleys for such cords, and the draft-cord connected with the Windlass-pulley, substantially as set forth.
9. In a billing-press, the combination of the framing, the plunger, the toggle-arms, a pulley, and abrake shoe or shoes movable into contact with the pulley and arranged to be engaged by the toggle arms and connections, substantially as set forth.
10. In a baling-press, the combination of the framing, the toggle-arms, the pulley, the brakeshoes arranged in position for engagement by the toggle-arms, whereby they may be forced into engagement with the pulley, and having handle-like portions, by which they may be moved out of braking position, substantially as set forth.
11. In a baling-press, the combination of the press-box having a discharge-opening, a gate for closing said opening, latches arranged at the opposite sides of the machine and arranged to engage said gate, levers connected at their outer ends to the latches, and having their inner ends connected with an operating lever or levers, substantially as set forth.
12. In a baling-press, the combination of the press-box, the gate for closing the dischargeopening thereof, the latches for engaging said gate, the levers It R, connected at their outer ends with the latches, and the operating lever or levers connected with the inner ends of levers R, and extended at their outer ends to the opposite sides of the press'box, substantially as set forth.
13. The combination, in a baling-press, of the press-box, the gate for the dischargeopening thereof, the latches for securing said gate closed, the levers R R, pivotally supported and having their outer ends connected with the latches, the operating lever or levers, and connection between said operating lever or levers and the levers R, substantially as set forth.
14. The combination, in a baling-press, of the press-box, the gate for closing the discharge-opening thereof, the latches r, the le vers R,connected at their outer ends, the handle-lever S, connected with the inner ends of the levers R, and the lever S, connected with lever S, such levers S S being extended at their outer ends to the opposite sides of the press-box, substantially as set forth.
