Be it known that I, JULIUs A. SPENCER, of Dwight, in Livingston county, and State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Baling-Presses, the construction and operation of which I will proceed to explain, reference being had to the annexed drawingsand the letters and figures thereon, in.which -Letters Patent dated August 22, 1882, No.
262,992, were issued to this applicant.
The first in'order of the improvements in this machine is in the device for reciprocating the plunger P. The rear of the plunger 1? is hinged to the end of the toggle-joint, consisting of the two levers P and P jointed together about two-thirds the way back from the plunger.

It will be seen that the joint S, where the rear end of the toggle hinges, is on a plane below the center of the plunger P. When the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 4, the plunger is forward at its farthermost point against the bale in the bale-chamber, and the toggle-joint lies so thejoint J is depressed to The rear end of the leverP is hinged to the frame A at S. Any power may be used that will pull alternately on chains m and c, and as the power is no part of this invention, no further description of it is deemed to be necessary. M
It is obvious that as the lever P approaches a perpendicular line it opens the toggle-joint easier, until at last its own weightcarries the plunger back as far as is necessary, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. at.
Hinging the toggle-joint on the frame at S on a plane below the center of the plunger P, where its opposite end is hinged, partially rethe toggle-joint down to force the plunger forward, as thetendency of the toggle so arranged is to force the plunger more directly forward without frictional contact with any side of the bale-chamber to any extent. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:
