Description

G. 's. MANNING.
Carriage-Spring.
No. 39,297. I Patented July 21, 1863.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
G. S. MANNING, OF SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENTlN WHEELAVEHICLES.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, G. S. ll/IANNING, of Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in WVheel-Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side sectional view of a wagon with my invention applied to it; Fig. 2, a detached portion of my invention; Fig. 3, a section of Fig. 2, taken in the line as w.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to an improvement in the springs of wheel-vehicles, the mode of applying them, 850., whereby it is believed that several advantages are obtained over the old or ordinary springs, as hereinafter described. To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it. 7
A represents the body of a wagon, and B B the front and back axles of the same.
0 represents the springs, one part, a, of which is around and underneath the axles, and.is connected by a link, I), to the other part, 0. (See Figs. 1 and 3.) 'lhe upper ends of the part a of the springs of the back axle are attached to the bottom of the body A, as shown at d, and the two parts a c of the back springs pass through staples 6, attached to a bar, j, which is secured to the bottom of the body A some distance in front of the back axle. The upper ends of the parts 0 simply bear against the under side of the parts a. By this arrangement a bent form is given the springs, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. One or more leaves, 9, may be added to the springs, if necessary or desired. These leaves are simply passed through the staplese, as shown in Fig. 1. The parts a of the springs are secured to the axles by means of clips D, which encompass the axles--one at each side of each part a of thespringsand pass through plates E, and are secured thereto by nuts h. The plates E are secured to the parts a by means of countersinks t, which form teats j, the teats ot' the parts a fitting in the countersinks 'i of the plates E, and teats k on the axles B, fitting in countersinks i in the parts a of the springs. (SeeFig.3.) By this arrangementit will be seen that the springs are not weakened by having holes made through them in attaching them to the axles. The front springs are applied in precisely the same way as the back springs, the only modification being that which is required in order to admit of the front axle turning, as usual, and which consists in having the m of which are attached to the fifth-wheel F, and the upper ends of the parts a to a cross bar, a, of the fifth-wheel. By this arrangethat is durable, and which admits ot' a longitudinal degree of elasticitythat is to say, of a forward and backward play of the wheels and axles-and which consequently obviates in a great degree the jars and concussions to which wheehvehiclesare liable in coming in contact with stones and other obstructions.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The springs O, composed of two principal parts, a 0, connected together by a link, b, and secured to the axles B and to the vehicle, in the manner substantially as herein set forth.
