To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, J osnrn SIDNEY COOL- IDGE, of *ashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in harness attachments, the object of the same being to provide certain improvements over the existing devices for attaching horses to vehicles.

A further object is to provide a device of the above character of such construction that the same may be applied to any harness without disfiguring or dismembering the same.

A further object in the connection is to provide an adjustable spring-locking bolt.

A further object is to provide a device of the above character which shall be simple and efficient in use; and with'these ends in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will he hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

No. 1 represents a case provided with the downwardly-projecting lips 2. The said lips 2 are provided with the oblong eyes or loops 3 to receive the straps at and 5. The front of the case 1 is provided with the downwardly-projecting lug 10, in line with which is the cylinder 11, carrying the bolt 12, the free end of which is beveled to facilitate the introduction of the cap to the lug 10. The cylinder is provided at its outer end with the female screw-threads 125-, adapted to receive the male thread formed on the thumb-nut 13. The nut is perforated and embraces the bolt 12. The bolt is forced down by means of the spiral spring 14, one endof which bears against the shoulder 15 and the opposite end upon the nut 13. The object of having the bolt removably secured in the cylinder is to enable the spring to be removed when worn without in any manner disfiguring or injuring the cylinder. l

The plate 16 is secured to the breeching 17 and the trace-strap 18 by means of the screws 18}, which are held in position by means of the nuts 19. The said plate 16 is provided at its free end with the annular cap 20, the same sloping downward and adapted to embrace the lug 10, as shown in Fig. 3. The cap is provided with the recess 21 to receive the end of The plate 16 is provided with the recess 22, adapted to engage the stud 23 on the case 1 for the purpose of steadying the parts. To the case 1 is secured the spring 24., the office of which is to force the cap from the lug when the bolt is released.

The plate 16 is provided with the loop 25, carrying the tug 26. To the loop 27 of the bolt may be attached the lines 28, as shown in Fig. 2, said lines being connected with the driver by suitable means, so that if the horses should run the tightening of the lines would draw the bolt 12 and the spring 24 would cast the plate 16 aside and release the animal from the vehicle.

It will be observed that the particular advantage this device possesses over others con- 9 sists in the construction of the case and arrangements of the straps, whereby the same may be attached to any harness without cutting the same, as has heretofore been necessary in order to use devices of this character.

My invention is secured to harness in the following manner: The strap 4 is provided at its upper end with a buckle, 29, to receive the saddle-strap 80, and the lower end of thestrap t is free and provided with holes to receive the buckle 31 on the girth 32. The strap 5 is provided with the buckle 33 to receive the end of the breeching 34, the opposite end of the strap 5 being plain and adapted to be secured to the breast-strap 35 by means of the buckle 36 thereon. The tug 26 is placed on the thill and the trace-strap 18 is secured thereon, as shown in Fig. 1. The horse is put between the thills and the cap 20 is shoved upon the lug 10, thereby forcing backward the bolt 12,

which immediately returns when the cap is in position and holds the same securely in place. Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with the ease having curved projecting lips provided with eyes adapted to receive the straps 4 and 5 and pins secured to said casing to engage said straps, of a serviceable plate, 8, covering said straps and pins, substantially as shown and described. 2. The combination, with the case having curved projecting lips provided with eyes to receive the straps 4 and 5, pins secured to said casing to engage said straps, a lug formed on the opposite side of said casing, and a spring adjacent to said lug, of a cap to engage said lug and means for retaining the cap upon the lug, substantially as shown and described.
