SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,902, dated November 13, 1888.

Application filed April 19, 1888. Serial No. 271,122. (No modehl and State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Interior Finishings of Buildings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a wainscoting embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of the same on the plane of line w w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one ofthe panels o f which it is constructed.

In all the figures the same letters refer to the same parts.

The object of my invention is to produce a new and useful interior finish for walls, ceilings, or floors, in whole or in part, that may be easily applied, and that is not only neat in appearance, but that is so constructed as to prevent the rapid spreading of fire from one room to another. I accomplish this object by the novel construction of my interior finish'for houses, as will be hereinafter fully described, and more particularly set forth in the claim.

A represents an iron-paneled frame constructed as follows: a is the top or face plate, made of any convenient size and has rectangular openings in series. 1) represents said openings, which may be made polygonal without departing from the spirit of my invent-ion. A frame-work, c 0 c", is thus formed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. (l are ribs of iron integral with said frame-work and at right angles with the face of the same. 7

B represents a block or panel, which may be of wood or other material, plain or ornamented on its face, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

Blocks I) are constructed, as shown in Fig. 3, with a face portion, 0, its edges chamfered or grooved, as atf, and an inwardly-projec ing dovetailed portion, provided with dove tail recesses or grooves gacross the inner face of the block. The chamfers or grooves f of two contiguous blocks form a dovetail recess, which is filled up with putty, cement, or other material, so as to form an even continuous surface on the wall, ceiling, floor, or wainscoting, as the case may be.

At various points on the face of frame A are holes h or cut-aways h, through which bolts or screws pass through frame A to secure it in place. Blocks B are also cut away in one corner for the same purpose, as shown at 1', Figs. 1 and 3. The sides of lower or inner portion,g, being ehamfered inwardly, as shown atjj, it will be seen that the whole inner portion, 9, is particularly adapted to be gripped or secured by the cement, as shown particularly in Fig. 2.

G is cement used to bind the series of blocks B securely into the openings 1).

In practice I provide the metal frames or bed-plates A, of any convenient size, suited to the purpose required. Blocks B, of wood or any other material, are inserted in the openings b. The frame is then turned over face downward on any level surface. A suitable cement is then filled in around and upon blocks B, which are a. little shallower than frame A, so that a good body of cement will cover blocks B entirely. Then the outer face of panel is polished and finished in any desired manner. Said panels B are now secured in place by screws,'bolts, or other fastenings, as hereinbefore described.

It will be seen from the above that by this mode of construction I produce a neat, strong, and fire-proof interior finish for buildings. Blocks or panels B may be of various colored or grained wood, ornamented as desired. The frames A being filled and the face of the compound biock being leveled or otherwise finished, they are then secured in place by bolts on screws in holes h.

I do not claim, broadly, a dovetail projection or groove; but

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the frame A, having T shaped rails, in combination with the blocks B, having dovetailed grooves covering the rails and channeled with other dovetailed grooves, and a cementing material to fill the vacancies in the grooves, whereby the blocks are securely held within the frame, as described.
