NITED STATES PATENT :i nines.
ALBERT H. OVERMAN, or NEWTON, ASSIGNOR TO THE ovnnMAn WHEEL COMPANY, or BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SADDLE FOR BlCYCLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,821, dated November 13, 1888.
Application filed September 10, 1888. Serial No. 285,025. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. OVERMAN, residing at Newton, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented cor tain new and useful Improvements in Saddles for Velocipedes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forma part of this specil0 flcation.
My invention relates to an improvement in vcloeipede-saddles of the suspension type, the object being to provide for the easy removal and restoration of their flexible seats.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a contractor connecting the forward and rear seat-supports, whereby such supports may be drawn toward each other, and in certain details of construction and combinationsof parts,as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in vertical longitudinal section, of a saddle embody- 2 ing my invention and applied to a bicycle. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detached view, in side elevation, of the contractor; and Fig. 3 is a dctached plan view of one of the binders, shown in full size.
As herein shown, the contractor A consists of an ordinary leather strap formed, as it were, into a long closed loop, and having its ends secured together by a buckle, B, located upon the under side of the 1oop,whieh is adjusted 3 5 in length thereby. The ends of the loop are each provided with an ordinary slide, (3, and with a metallic eye, 1), virtually rectangular in shape. Two binders, respectively passed through the outer ends of the said eyes, each consist of a strip of flexible metal having its ends cut away to form leaves F F, and folded inward and over upon its upper face, and provided with a central longitudinal slot, G, receiving the said leaves, which are bent to fasten and undo the binder. The outer ends of the binders are respectively clasped over the forward spring seat-support,H,of the saddle and the rear spring seat-support, I, thereof. The flexible scat J of the saddle is located di rcetly over and extends longitudinally with the described contractor A, and is provided at each end with hooks K, whereby it is detachably connected with the said front and rear spring scat-supports, which place it under considerable tension.
It will be apparent that by placing the hand under the seat and grasping and pulling down upon the described contractor the two spring scat-supports will be drawn toward each other, thus removing the tension upon the seat, which may then he removed. To replace the seat the contractor is pulled down, as before, to contract or pull the supports toward each other, so as to enable the seat to be readily applied to them. When this has been done, the tension upon the contractor is removed, and the seat-supports resume their normal positions and place the scat under its normal "tension.
I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
.I-[aving fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a veiocipede-saddle, a contractor connectingits rear and forward spring seat-supports for drawing them toward each other to facilitate the removal and attachment of the flexible seat which is connected with such supports and located above such contractor, sub stantially as set forth. 8 5
2. In a velocipede-saddle, an adjustable contractor consisting of a leather strap connected with the rear and forward spring seat-sup ports for drawing them toward each other to facilitate the removal and attachment of the flexible seat which is connected with Such supports and located above such contractor, substantially as set forth.
3. In a vclocipede-saddle, a contractor connecting the rear and forward spring scat-sup- 5 ports and consisting of a leather strap, eyes connected therewith, and metal binders passv ing through such eyes and clasped over the forward and rear seat-supports, whereby the specification in the presence of two subscribsaid supports may be pulled toward each other i-ng Witnesses.
for the removal and attachment of the seat which is detachably connected with them and ALBERT B 5 located above the said contractor, substantially Witnesses:
as set forth. LUTHER WHITE,
In testimony whereof I have signed this LEWIS M. FERRY.
