HARNESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Fatent No. 392,784, dated November 1.3, 1888.
Application filed June 26, 1888. Serial No. 278,271. (No model.)
To oaZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Owens 0. COLE, of Al bion, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, haveinvented a new and Improved Harness-Tug Coupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is an improved means for coupling traces to breast-collars or to tug attachments of hame-collars.
The construction and combination of parts are as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a single harncssof the breast-collar pattern provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the adjustable coupler, showing a portion of the tug. Fig. 3 isa bottom view of a portion of one of the shafts or thills provided with guides or keepers for the rear member of the tug; and Fig. 4 is a cross-section through the thill on the line w .r, Fig. 3.
The breast-collar A of the harness is provided with or terminates in the tug or trace B; but instead of continuing the said tug rearward of a length to reach the whiflletree, I form the same of a short length, and in connection therewith employ a separate piece, B, which is preferably formed of iron or steel, the rear end of the member B of the tug being formed with an eye, I), for engaging the whiffletree-hook of the whiflietree C. It will be observed that the whiiiletree O is located on the under side of the cross-bar of the shafts D, which arrangement allows the rear member, B, of the tug to extend along the under side of the shaft D. The under side of the shaft D is provided with guides or keepers for partially supporting the tug, consisting, preferably, of angular straps'E E, one member of each strap being secured to the side of the shaft, as by a screw, 0, and the other member of the strap being secured by screws 6 to a block, F, carried by the shaft on its under side. The block F is formed with a longitudinal passage, f, for the member B of the tug, and the two straps E are strengthened or braced by a longitudinal block, E, secured to the shaft between said straps. It will be understood that any other suitable guide or support for the tug may be provided in lieu of the arrangement just described.
In order that the members B B. of the tug may be adjustably and detachably united, I provide a novel construction of coupler therefor, as follows: A fiat sleeve, G, adapted to slide over the end of the rear member, B, of the tug is provided with lugs 9, projecting from one side face thereof, between which there is pivoted by means of a pin, 9, a spring-acted locking-lever, H, formed with a bit, h, at one end, its opposite end, h, forming a thumb-piece for operating the lever. The spring I of the lever may be formed of wire, which is coiled at its ends around the pivotpin 9 and secured to thelatter, the wire at its center being bent outward, forming an arm, 6, which bears on the back of the lover. The coupler-sleeve G is formed with an arm, G, extending parallel therewith, or approximately so, and united to the sleeve, as at g".
In operation the arm G of the couplersleeve is secured to the front member, B, of the tug,the said member being formed with an eye, I), for that purpose. The sleeve is then passed onto the member B of the tug, the locking-lever H being raised to take the bit h thereof out of the path of the tug, and as the member B moves into the sleeve G one of the eyes or slots 1) of said member comes opposite the bit of the locking lever and is engaged thereby, thus coupling the two parts of the tug firmly together. The member B being formed with a series of eyes or slots, 1), the bit of the lever may be engaged with either one thereof to lengthen or shorten the tug.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, the harness-coupling device consisting of a sleeve or frame adapted to receive and slide upon a trace, and provided with a lever or tongue, H, for engaging the latter, and with a lateral hook or arm, G, for engagement with the harness-collar, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a trace and the breast-collar having an aperture in its rear ends, and a coupling device having a lever for connecting it adjustably with the trace, and a hook for connection with the breastcollar, substantially and shown and described.
CYRUS G. COLE.
