Be it known that I, LEW K. STRANG, of IIaverhill, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Locks, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, refer to once being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a freight-car door,showing my improved lock in use; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section 1 taken on line xa'in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, afront view of a portion of the escutcheon, showing the bolt removed; Fig. 4, a side elevation of the locking-bar detached; and Fig. 5, an elevation of a portion of the body of the car, showing the receiving-plate.
Like letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates to that class of locks 2 which are employed for locking freight-cars and adapted to be sealed; and it consists in certain novel features, as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the car; B, the car-door; O, the face-plate or escutcheon; D, the bolt; E, the locking-bar,and G the catch. The door slides in ways on the outside of the car-body, in the usual manner. The escutclieon consists of a metallic plate secured to the outer face of the door B, near the rear end thereof, by means of screws 2. Projecting-centrally from the rear of the escutcheon is a tube, 12, which passes through a hole formed in the door to receive it, the bolt D being fitted to slide in said tube.
The catch G (see Fig. 5) is secured to the edge of the door in such a position that the hole b in said plate will register with the tube '21 and receive the bolt D when the door is closed.
The bolt D is provided on its inner end with a head, f, which is of greater diameter than 50 the body cl of said bolt, the tube 0 being provided at its forward end with a flange, 9, (see Fig. 3,) adapted to engage said head and pre vent the bolt from being withdrawn from the tube. The body (Z of the bolt D is provided with three longitudinal splines, 15, 25, and 35,
all disposed in the same vertical plane.
An arm or bracket, H, (see Fig. 1,) is secured to the face of the escutcheon, said arm being provided in its outer end with a hole,
777,, having a spline-slot,p, in its upper edge adapted to receive the bolt D and its spline 15, the flange 1 being also provided with a slot or groove, 45, in the same relative position, through which the spline 25 may pass.
The locking-bar E consists of a metallic plate having a hole, 25, in one end, and is dis posed on the bolt D between the arm H and escutcheon C, said bar being provided. with a slot, 1', adapted to register with the splineslots 1) 45 when said lockingbar is revolved on said bolt.
The bar E is provided at its opposite end with a head, 55, having a hole, 65, adapted to register with a similar hole in a stud or stop,
75, on the face of the escuteheon O and receive the sealingwire 85.
In the use of my improvement, the door being looked, as shown in Fig. 2, if it is desired to unlock the same, the locking-bar E is revolved on the bolt D until its spline-slot 1' 8o registers with the similar slots 19 and 45 in the arm H and flange g, a stop, 95, being secured centrally to the upper portion of the escuteheon O,to engage the head 55 of said bar and determine this point. The belt maythen 8 5 be Withdrawn until its head f is free from the plate G, and the space between the splines 25 and 35 registers with the locking-bar, permitting said loar to be turned down into its original position against the stop 75. This unlocks the door and at the same time prevents the bolt from being accidentally forced inward as the inner end of the spline 25 engages the edge of the hole t in said bar. To look the door again the bar E is elevated until its head meets the stop 95, when the spline-slots all register, as before, and the bolt may be pushed inward until the opening between the splines 15 and 25 permits said bar to be dropped downward against the stop 7 5. A sealing-wire, 85, is then passed through the holes in the head 55 of said bar and in said stop, the ends of said wire being then secured by a seal, 100, in the usual manner.
5 The outer end of the bolt D may be provided with a ring, 105, to enable it to be more readily manipulated, if desired.
It will readily be seen that whenthe looking-bar E is down or in engagement with the stop one of the splines, 15, 25, or 35, will engage said bar and prevent the bolt from being moved in or out until said bar is ele vated. 'Moreover, when said bar is secured to the stop 75 by the wire 85, as described, it is impossible to slip said bolt by stretching the loop of said wire, as may be done in many locks of this description when sealed in this manner, it being impossible to move said bolt until the head 55 of the bar E is elevated and brought into contact with the stop 95.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is 1. In a lock of the character described, the combination of an escutcheon provided with arearwardlyprojecting tubeadapted to register with the bolt-hole in a locking-plate secured to the body of the car, an arm secured to said escuteheon and provided with a bolthole registering with the hole in said tube, a slot in said arm opening into said bolthole, a slot in the mouth of said tube registering with the slot in said arm, a bolt disposed in said arm and tube and provided with longitudinal splines on its body disposed in the same Vertical plane and adapted to slide in said spline-slots, and a looking-bar provided with a hole in one end and disposed on said bolt between said escutcheon and arm, said bar having a spline-slot adapted to register with the slots in said arm and tube and permit 2. 3. In a lock, the bolt D, provided with the splines 15, 25, and 35, arranged in the same vertical plane, in combination with the looking-bar E, provided with the bolt-holet and spline-slot 7, said bar being disposed on said bolt and adapted to retain it in position in the lock, substantially as set forth.
4.. In a lock, the combination of the esoutoheon 0, provided with the tube a and spline-slot 45, the arm II, secured to said esoutcheon and having the bolt-hole m and spline-slotp, registering with said slot 45, the bolt D, disposed in said arm and tube and having the headfand splines 15. 25, and 35, the locking-bar E, disposed on the tube between said arm and eseutoheon and provided with the spline-slotrand head 55, having the wirehole 65, and the stop 75, provided with a Wirehole adapted to register with the hole 65, by means of which said lockingbar may be secured to said stop and prevent the bolt from being slipped in said tube and arm, substantially as specified.
