IIENRY MYERS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
STOVEDOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,630, dated November 13, 1888..
Application filed March 12, [888.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY MYERS, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stove-Doors, of which the following` is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to the class of stove doors in which the door proper slides in a vertical direction, the object of the same being to provide a door which, when opened partially or full, will admit a uniform charge of fresh air over the whole fuel-bed-that is to say, by opening the door the air will enter in a horizontal column over the body of incandescent fuel, whereby the cooling off ol1 the saine will at all times be regular and uniform; and to which ends it consists of a frame se 4eu red to a stove-body in-which the door slides, and means for holding the same in any position, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
My invention will be more fully understood taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein I have fully illustrated the same, and in which-- Figure l illustrates a portion of a stove with my improved door and frame in application. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line x w of Fig. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line y y of Fig. 2, and Fig. l is a detail view of the device for holding the door in any desired position.
Referring now to the drawings for afurther description of my invention, c is the opening in the stove-body A, through which the fuel is admitted to the combustion-chamber, and which is closed by the door C. This door C slides up and down in the frame D, made of cast-iron or other suitable material, and may be ornamented withvarious designs.
The frame D consists of the cross-pieces d and d and the uprights d2 and d. The latter are provided with recesses d, and which, when applied to the stove-body, form grooves in Serial No. 266,991. (No model.)
which the door C slides; or the uprights may be grooved.
The upright dL is provided with a ratcheted surface, with which one or more brackets, c, cast or otherwise secured to the door, engage. A spring, c, is attached to the door, causing the bracket c to engage in one of the teeth of the upright d,2 to hold the door in any desired position. Near the horizontal edges of the opening t are provided projections a and t? to prevent the escape of smoke. A knob,f, is attached to the door for opening and closing the same.
Ihe frame D may be extended downward from the opening c, so that the door may be slid either below the edge ct and above the edge a ofthe opening c, or only below the edge ai, or, as shown in the drawings, only above the edge ct.
Vhen it is desired to close the door--that is, to slide the same downward-the bracket c is disengaged from the rack di by simply pulling the knobj'and sliding the door down ward. To slide the same upward, the knob is to be pushed in that direction, and as soon as the movement ceases the bracket c by the spring c is thrown in one of the teeth of the rack di, preventing any slipping of the door.
Having thus described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a stove-body a frame consisting of two recessed uprights and one or more cross -pieces, a vertically-sliding door provided with brackets on its outer side, a rack on said uprights with which one or more of said brackets engage, and a spring causing said bracket or brackets to engage with said rack, as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY MYERS.
