-UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN PENDERGAST, OF VRENTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
CARRIAGE-SHACKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,288, dated November 6, 1888.
.Application filed November 11,1887. Serial No. 254,033. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PENDERGAST, of Wrenthain, in the eountyof Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oarriage-Shackles, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to enable the shackle to be made fast or loose, as may be desired, and thereby to adj ust it against noise or rattle and to compensate for its wear.
This invention consists in the combination,
with the aXleclip and shaft-extension turning thereon,oi" an ad]l ustable device by which noise `and rattle of the coupling or shackle can be prevented'and its wear compensated for, all as hereinafter described.
In the drawings forming part of this specitication, Figure l is a plan view of the carriageshackle and a portion of the axle and shaft. Fig.- 2 is a vertical section, line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, line 3 3, Fig. 2. l l
In the drawings,Ais a portion of a carriageshaft. B is a portion of a carriage-axle.
C is the axle-clip straddling and secured to v the axle B. D is the bar attached to shaft A engaged by the forward end of a headed screwthreaded stud, G. This stud G extends from the rear to the front side of clip C, through the axle and clip, and its head G2 is at the rear side of the clip, and the stud G, sufficiently turned up and against the springplate H, forces said plate into close contact with the elastic cushion F, and in turn the cushion F into close contact with the end of the shaft-bar D, the whole resulting in binding' the shaft-bar D upon the pintle E of the axle-clip, and thereby preventing rattling of the shackle and enabling its Wear to be compensated for.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination of an aXle-clip,G, straddling and secured to the axle B, a headed screw-threaded stud, G, extending from rear to front of clip through the axle and clip, and screwing into and with its head at rear side of clip, a spring-plate, H, locatedbetween the shaft-carrying arms of the clip and back of the shaft-bar D and loosely engaged by the front end of said stud, and an elastic cushionblock, F, between said arms and back of the shaft-bar and backed by said plate, all as described, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereofl have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN PENDERGA ST.
